The oil in my ralliart is so damn clear, I cant even see it. My dad said that when the oil gets older, it will get darker and it will be easier to see.

My question is, when the oil does get older and darker are you supposed to get it changed?

I bring my car in for service at all of the reccomended times, but im just wondering if it is smart to change the oil when it starts getting dark?

Well normally it doesnt take very long for the oil to start turning dark. Just follow your 3000 mile oil change recommendation and you will be fine.!

just follow the intervals set up in your manual (depending on your drive schedule) and you'll be fine.

What kind of oil are you using? If you're using regular oil, 3 or 4,000 miles would be the regular interval (or more if you don't drive in traffic).

If it's synthetic, you can push it for much longer. I'm no expert on synthetic oils, but it lasts a lot longer than the regular stuff.

I dont know what kind of oil it is. Its whatever oil the factory put in it. Its the same oil winter and summer, so I dont have to change to winter oil in the winter, so thats cool.

 

If your oil is still a nice, light amber color, then it's fine and doesn't need to be changed yet. Oil life depends greatly upon how you drive your car - lots of stop-and-go traffic will obviously wear it out quicker. I'd still stick to the scheduled maintainence intervals, since it's always better to change it a bit early rather than late. A well oiled motor is a happy motor.

 

I agree with turbonutter. The type and amount of driving you do will affect how long your oil lasts as well as the oil type you use.

Using regular oil I've changed my oil every 3000 miles and it hasn't been horribly dark, too light, nor had I emptied out much less than the 4 quarts that goes in.

Using fully synthetic oil I've changed it every 4500 miles with slightly better results (clearer and more oil when the change is made).
