Foam thing on stock intake?

Should I leave it on or take it off?

1. Will more air come in if I take it off, and cool the engine more?
2. Is it safe to take it off? I dont want to give it a chance to get even a bit of water or dust in it.

Thanks!

first: theintake doenst cool the engine. it provides air for more pressure and better compression, which gives more power.

second: the filter isnt preventing much air. its more of the duct at the end of the intake. just whip out the dough and buy a new CAI. RRM, Injen....someone else make them for RA's. I think its AEM. They are all about the same. Look for a 2-piece if you are worried about water.

third: without a filter, you suck ANYTHING in the air directly into the engine. This would be worse than running without an oil filter. Just think what would happen if a small leaf gets stuck in a valve? you how have a 3cyl engine

You can get some pretty cheap intake kits on ebay if you dont mind doing a bit more work. IMHO, the name-band intakes are worth it, as they have been tested on our cars

btw, someone in the regestry has a dyno result from an RA /w just the RRM intake. good to get an idea of what gains you can expect.

dude, just grab that extension piece and just pull the whole thing off. unless it's raining and ****, it doesn't even need to be there. i ran mine like that for about 3 weeks before installing my Injen CAI with AEM valve and it was perfectly fine, even during some rain.

if you're not sure of what i'm talking about, it's the plastic 'pipe' extension that comes out of the big square box thing (the filter is in there) and comes all the way to the front of the car ending in that flatter piece that has that little foam piece on there. by the way, i took that foam piece off of mine like the second day i had the car cause it's useless, it's just there to cushen (sp?) the hood when it get's closed, that's all. and yes, you will get a bit more air in there, but no, you won't notice any diff with it off, i didn't. so yeah, just grab that whole piece, pull on it and it will just pull right off the air filter box. it sounds sooooo much better like that too!!
peace.

Uhhh guys, he isn't talking about the air filter, he is talking about the foam piece at the very end of the intake duct. I'm not sure what it is for.

Take that foam thing off, all it does is obstruct airflow.

uhhhhhh gee, do ya think? dude, i know what he's talking about, all i'm saying is that he should take the whole intake extension thing (that has that foam piece on the end) right off. with that thing off, you've just about got a SRI, if it weren't for the massive air filter box and lamer piping into the manifold.

Uhhh gee, does it look like I was talking about your post? Look at the post a couple before yours, it talks about the air filter.

Yeah pull it off and take the intake pipe out unless it;s raining like rydog said, the boys in Vancouver showed me that trick, I showed the gang in Calgary and it does make a HUGE difference.

IMO, the intake pipe channels cold air from outside the engine bay. Wouldn't this be better than grabing hot air from around the engine? I guess it its kind of the whole CAI-SRI discussion. Anyhow can you talk more about the HUGE difference? Did you notice a difference in performance? Just wondering cause I am kinda interested in the mod ....
