You would know if it does.. Its a loud Pop noise and thats not normal.
There are a few things it could be.Cant be you are running rich because you would need too much Fuel for that and if i am correct you havent done any mods to the fuel system right? So that eliminates the running rich part. It may be lean due to the fact that you are allowing more air to flow through.Did you take out the MAF sensor? That could cause some problems as well. There are a ton of possibilities leading to the backfire.. Was it a one time deal or is it everytime you downshift(pretty consistently). If you are unsure of the lean rich thing you should invest in a AFR (Air/Fuel Ratio) guage. That will be a accurate reading all the time as to what your Air Fuel ratio is.If you are running rich or lean it will tell you.

If you forgot to hook up the MAF sensor when you installed your CAI, the computer defaults to a VERY rich fuel map. It only gets feedback from the O2 sensor at that point, so it responds rather slow.

Is your "check engine" light on? If you left the MAF unplugged, it would be.

...just throwing out possibilities...

If the MAF sensor wasn't there, he should have the check engine light on. Also, this car is fuel injected, if all he did was add the intake, then he isn't running rich or lean. The fuel system IS far more forgiving in that respect. It sees more air coming in, so it adjusts the injectors. Quite a simple process. Also, if it WAS running rich or lean, he would be getting a check engine light.
Are you sure it is not deceleration misfire? The engine kind of stumbles when you push in the clutch (especially after high RPM). If that is what you are noticing, it isn't TOTALLY abnormal, but your intake probably caused it/resulted in it.

I think I had a backfire yesterday. I was pulling out of a sidestreet (turning left) and I had poor visibilty to my right (due to a car illegally parked). I thought I was clear both way, but after I pulled out some I saw a car coming up pretty quick to my right. I had a to make a quick choice to either punch it or throw it in reverse quickly. Since I figured I was already so far out in the intersection I decided to punch. I squealed the tires real bad and when I shifted to 2nd I heard a loud pop. I thought I blew a tire for a second there. After reading this I'm starting to think the car backfired. If it did this is the first time it has happened.
