Optimal Shifting

What is the ideal RPM to shift with max accelleration in mind? And further more, through all of the gears, to keep those MPH climbing the fastest. do you guys push it to redline?? Do you shift earlier??

thanks

Yeah, I go for redline - the engine keeps pulling hard enough to redline to make it worth going all the way. Winding it out further also puts you at higher rpm after the shift, with more power on tap after the shift as well.

I don't agree. I shift at 6000-RPM. I shift fast enough that my RPMs only drop to about 4500, still well within MIVEC. The Hp and torque start to drop down between 5500 and 6000 RPMs. I'm glad someone brought this up though because I thought that I might be shifting a half second to late and I want other peoples opinions too.

This has probably been discussed quite often too, but in letting the engine rev to redline, yes the hp does fall off a bit after 5750, HOWEVER, in lower gears you are making much more tq to the ground because of the gearing. If you shift the engine early, even once the engine is at hp peak, you are still not putting down as much power to the ground as you would have been at redline in the last gear. Thus, you are wasting potential energy, and not getting the most out of your engine.

Exactly what I was going to say. Just because you are in mivec after the shift, doesn't mean you are getting good power. Think, the engine at 6000RPM is moving the car faster than it would be in a lower gear. For this engine, that is true. For a V8 with flat torque and power curves, you usually want to keep the needle in the fattest area of the curves. This doesn't always mean redline, for our engine, close to redline is best.

So I was thinking that 6000 may be a hair late but you are saying that 6000 is a hair early but 7000 is late, right?
