Weird Noise from steering section

I'm probably taking my car back to the collision center here soon, but, everytime i go to make a more then 40 degree turn i get a loud "thwang" sound.... it's not because the cold weather cuz it started yesterday in like 60-70 degree weather...

I just drove probably about 1 mile and turnin into the parking lot of my work place, i heard it again... i checked under the hood, my fluids seem ok..

Any Ideas?

That's bad. See if you can narrow down where the sound is coming from. Does it do it when you're stopped, or just when you're rolling? Does it do it with the front wheels off the ground?

It happens both when I'm parked or turning roughly more than 45 degrees...

I haven't lifted the front wheels off the ground, When i went to sheetz the other day i had my sister turn the steering wheel...

Looking from the drivers side, you'll see the steering pump... if you look down you'll see "a cable" i couldn't really tell (bad lighting) but thats where the sound came from... like just behind the drivers wheel.

Is the noise coming from the right side front wheel. The reason I ask is because I have been getting a sort of rubbing noise from the right wheel whenever I turn the wheels to the left. It's sort of a rubbing noise that I hear at slow speeds when I turn the wheel to the left and as I turn the wheel back to center. Sometimes it's quite loud so I have to bring it in to be looked at.

yea, sometimes it shakes the floor of the drivers side, and i know it's around or behind the drivers side wheel... i'm guessing something connected to the wheels... or rack and pinion on the steering.

I just had my car at the dealer for the sort of rubbing noise I was getting from the front passenger side wheel when I made left turns.
I found out that the dealership left the rubber "pucks" that they put somewhere in the suspension when they ship the car to the dealership. They were supposed to take them out once they sold the car but must have forgot. Pretty retarded if you ask me.
Anyway, I'll see if it's what was making the noise, but so far so good.

my moms Camero has done that for about the past year. The dealer said it was the power stearing assembly and pinion gear. Could possibly be a simular situation

Sorry for replying to an old thread, but I seem to be noticing the exact same problem. When I turn the steering left at around 45 degrees it will make a sort of "clunk" sound. It sounds more like a mechanical kind of clunk.

Is this happening to anyone else? Should I bring it into the dealer to have it looked at or not worry to much about it? The steering still seems to be fine, but I hope it doesn't get any worse.

I have seen this problem before, but not on a ralliart. I'm a n00b with ralliarts but my '93 Taurus SHO did that exact same thing. In cold weather or in the morning when the temp gets below 50. Not familiar with the ralliart suspension yet, but maybe this will help. Here's the exact quote from shotimes.com

"The noise is actually coming from the rubber coating on the outside of the strut bearing rubbing on the strut tower. Spraying this area with a silicone lubricant can provide a temporary fix. The permanent fix is to install a spacer that goes between the upper strut bearing and the strut tower."

I've been getting a noise lately in my RA when I turn. Its not a loud noise. But it sounds more like a noisy CV joint. I've had issues with CV joints before and thats kind of what it sounds like. Like a kind of slow metal grinding noise.

Hey I just had my RA in the shop today for its 15000km service and for this problem - in my case it was just some bushings needing lubrication- and thats all. Now its quiet as can be.
I couldn't turn left or right without that bumping/rubbing/squeaking noise - especially on uneven ground. But now its fixed.
If you know what to do give it a go or pass that on to your dealer/mechanic and hopefully it will sort it out for you all too.

So good to be able to turn without feeling embarrassed if i have passengers

i think the ralliart is cursed, after reading post i noticed similar "clunking" in the front end. also my buddies are starting to complain of the floor shaking, has anybody figured out this problem yet . the worst part of it is that the closest mitsu stealership is 5 hours away, sux living in a small town, half the ppl can't even say mitsubishi properly.
