ralliart curse strikes again

well like yeah obviously... my car crashed. well here is the story. there is a four lane corner that turns at 90 degrees. well i admit i wassnt driving as slow as you are supposed to but, i have gone this normal speed many times b4. just yesterday i was driving on the ouside lane like usual then a black honda civic looked like it was gonna crash into the outside lane curb, so basiclly it look like he was pulling into my lane so i kinda moved away, but i also understear when i braked when i saw the curb then BAM airbags and the whole shibang. the civic drove off... no LP, no nothing. well my dad took a look at it and he knew also i wassnt driving as safe as i should of. i felt like so much crap when i was looking at my baby. everything felt surreal for a couple of hours. as my friend in the car said "it that ralliart curse..." well the insurance co will look at it today. i thank who ever is out there that i have full coverage! i just got a couple of marks from the airbag, and i can tell you... airbag smells like sooo much crap. as for damage.. my front bumper a lil, just the lip kinda ripped and bumper too, right fender is bent and all that good stuff. the right tire is basiclly crap. looks like a good portion of the front end work will be needed. just a couple of weeks till im on the road again hopefully!

Well, sorry to hear that. Good thing it can be fixed and u weren't hurt bad. Looks like someone needs to go out on some country road or parking lots to practice corners though before trying something stupid on the road. =/ It always makes u look dumb when you crash your car in front of everyone trying to take a turn to fast. Remember, roads are not race tracks and kept clean. There is gravel, dirt, oil, and other stuff that will make your car slide of the road really easy. Take those city corners nice and slow, unless you know exactly how your car will react and there is nobody around you. (without breaking the speed limit or wreckless driving/excessive noise) Pix?

Uh... ABS anyone??? What's with the "going straight when braking hard" part??? I may not get what you guys are trying to say...

BTW NonEvo: Why would they race FWD cars in Touring Car if they sucked that bad??? Most of the top teams run FWD cars and they handle just fine... they just don't get the same launch as the AWD cars.

The driver does make a big difference though... no insult intended. There's no replacement for experience. I had the privilege of being invited to a skid pad track event and this is the stuff that you must learn in order to acquire the right reflexes.

I was only saying I dont' have ABS and when you are turning hard and make the front tires lock up, the car just goes straight because you can't steer.. the tires just slide in the direction your momentum is going. I thought the same might apply to his situation, but he COULD have ABS and I might be wrong.

edit: you can still steer, but the car just keeps going in one direction because of the momentum.

Doop! Sorry, I didn't check to see if yours was an RA too! My mistake...

Yeah, I crashed a brand new Golf (a while ago, in '98) because the wheels locked up and the thing went straight for the gardrail... that's why I got ABS in all other cars I bought afterwards.

BTW: FYI, all RAs have ABS...

I know that FWD can be very responsive if you know how to drive it correctly, but I feel that AWD or RWD are more responsive and better for daily driving. This could be in part to the types of car i am used to driving (Pickup Truck, Corvette, and muscle cars). But with any car one you get the proper modifications and driving technique they can all handle great.

Yep! And this chassis (on the RA) is not the worst of the bunch as far as FWD goes... the push is light (with real tires). The stock tires suk big time though! All drivers, even beginners, would benefit from good tires under them... especially on that car!

Damn dude that really sucks. Glad to see that you're alright though. I REALLY hope that does not happen to me in the future (knock on wood) but I usually drive like a grandma on city streets.

The rear sway bar helps understeer a lot as well. As for ABS, it isn't fool proof in turns. When you are turning, putting on the brakes (even without lockup) can cause the tires to lose grip and slide sideways (something the ABS can't control). I've done it lots. Taking a corner hard, it starts understeering, if you hit the brakes just hard enough, the back end will wip around. Like using the ebrake, but it's the regular brakes. No ABS either. The back brakes just put enough pressure on the back tires to make them slide, then ABS can't do anything.
