RE: Changing tranny Fluid

Ok, I've been seeing on here that a few people have changed they're fluid to the GM Syncromesh stuff. I just have a couple questions.

1) Did you do it your self or did ya get a shop to do it? If you did it your self how hard is it?
2) Difference's in shifting? Any?
3) Is there any other brand that you guys would recommend.
4) What spec fluid do we need? DOT 3-4?? I've never looked in the manual to see. Sorry...hehe

Thanks guys!

I did mine myself, in less than 30 minutes. All it takes is a drain pan, a couple sockets, and a funnel with a long tube on it.

Slide drain pan under trans, take out fill and drain plugs. The fill plug is 17mm, and (IIRC) the drain is 22mm. Drain completely.

Put drain plug back in, move pan up so it's beneath fill hole. Insert funnel tube into fill hole, and pour 2.3 quarts of your favorite fluid into the funnel. When the trans is full, fluid will start spilling out of the fill hole. Remove tube, replace fill plug.

As for differences in shifting, I noticed a slight change for the better. More notable was the difference in downshifting to 1st. I used to have to come to a complete stop, now I can be rolling a little.

I think Pennzoil sells some stuff that's the same as GM Synchromesh. I saw one bottle of it once, but haven't seen it again.

Spec is GL-4. GL-5 is not better in this case. It's too slippery, and your car will shift like crap.

I put mobil-1 synthetic 75-90 weight GL5 in mine, the dealer recomended it and I found it shifts better. Just my 2 cents.

I would feel better putting Mobil-1 in my car. I already use they're full synthetic motor oil. I just can't bring myself to put anything in my car that is associated w/ GM .... lol

Yeah, I use Mobil1 synthetic oil, too. I used it in my last three cars, and am very happy with it.

That said, I tried the Mobil1 gear lube in my last car. It didn't shift all that great to begin with, but the M1 made it worse (too slippery for the synchros to do their job), and the tranny ground itself to death not long after. I'm not blaming the death of that tranny on the M1 gear lube, but now that's the association my mind makes with using their gear lube. I put in a used tranny, which didn't shift all that great (just like any DSM ), and switched to GM Synchromesh, and the shifting was much better.

I'm not keen on putting Chevy anything in my car, either, but I made an exception in this case.

I used BG SynchroShift (synthetic) in my tranny. Shifts great, made to work with synchros, so no problems. Supposedly same stuff as the GM synchromesh (so it's not actually a GM product). Costs about $10/bottle.

Any difference in brand?? Does anybody know where to get the BG stuff in Canada (Joe you might know this)? I guess a GM dealer would have it.

Joe, did you do it yourself or did you have your mech. do it for ya?

you can get BG from crappy tire (they might have to order it)

i did the blend myself, after much trial and error (MTL by itself is too slick, MT-90 is not slick enough)

check the evo section, you'll find a ton of info on this. Basically we need the GL-4. The GL-5 has some harch chemicals that eat at our soft brass syncros. THis will cause premature wear and its also too slippery for our tranny. THis is why its a MUST that a GL-4 be used. GM syncromesh is some very spectacular stuff and many evo's that race swear by it. I am currently using the GM syncromesh and its fantastic stuff. Our trannies need the added friction of a GL-4 to make the syncros engage and work properly.

2 BG's and 1 redline lightweight.

Should take a little less than 3 quarts.
