Hooking laptop to ECU

Does anyone know how you would go about (what cables are needed) hooking a laptop up to the ECU to run diagnostic software? I downloaded this program called Digimoto and i'm assuming it's designed to be used by techs in the shop but I just wanted to play around with it. Any input would be appreciated.

Is the ODB-II software a specific program or will any diagnostic software work? And are you saying that it is already set up to connect with a USB cable or is a special connector needed?

OBD-II is the connector that hooks up to the car. The USB end is for your computer. you should be able to find something to connect the two. I don't know about the software though. Wherever you get the cable should have software too, or it'll be included.

Yea, I've been looking online and I found the cable. And I already downloaded the software. I really have no meaningful purpose for doing this but the program has a setting that displays about 13 analog gauges, just thought it'd be cool to see them all while driving. Thanks for your input.

Yea really. I used to have a pioneer cd player that had the screen saver where there was a race car driving and the swimming dolphins...I couldn't take my eyes off it when i first got it. I'll have to be a little more careful with this cause i'm sure the gauges will be a little more interesting.

I didn't get the cable yet. Went to Radio Shack, Pep Boys, and Advance...nobody seems to carry a simple cable. Can find some online with the serial connector, but I want a USB one.
