I was filling up my 05 RA today after driving it to what I thought was almost completely empty. The yellow light on the fuel gauge had been on for about 35 miles.
To my surprise, when I filled up at the gas station, it only took 10.5 gallons, and it was completely full! I thought our gas tanks were supposed to be 13+ gallons? Anyone notice this problem?

They are 13.5 us gallons and my light comes on when I have anything over ten gallons gone. in other words less than 3.5 gallons. They probably use a float to gauge the amount of fuel but the gauge itself on any car is never as accurate as it should be. I use my odometer to tell me when I need fuel i.e. compute my gas mileage and fill up when I reach a certain number of miles, usually 250-275

If that's the case, the RA probably has the most inaccurate fuel gauge I've ever owned (I've had a Jetta, BMW 5, Prelude, Integra, Legend Coupe). The needle was practically at the last marking... Originally Posted by DangerousDan

I agree with that, but it is still a problem with all gas gauges, just not a 3 gallon problem.

My light comes on when the needle is right about at E. I would never think to go 35 miles! (too lazy to walk for gas) It is funny how on a full tank, that 1st half seems to last way longer than the 2nd half. As soon as my needle dips below 1/2 tank, it seems like it's at E REAL fast. I know alot of cars do that, but it catches you by surprise sometimes.
Anybody know if running out of gas could lead to a costly repair? Somebody told me it screws up something, fuel filter or something, don't quite remember what he said. But would it hurt our cars?

When you fill up, how much gas actually goes in for you?Originally Posted by KODAM

The only way it would screw something up is if you had junk in your gas tank.
Older cars are usually drivin by people (like me) who can't afford to fill up until they get the money. When your car gets down close to fumes anything and everything that has accumulated over the years will be sucked up into the fuel pump. Don't run out of gas and you shouldn't have this problem.

Not really sure off hand, prices being what they are these days only putting $12 to $15 in at a time hoping to catch a price drop the next day or so. NOT WORKING OUT SO GOOD...lolOriginally Posted by ddcha

Best advice I can give I already have. Test your mileage with your normal driving habits and figure out where that leaves you. Fill up before 12 gallons at your normal MPG and you should never have a problem with your gauge. I wish I could disconnect my light. I might start a thread on that if I figure it out

Mitsu may have done for the reason to prevent damage in the long run by running on dirty empty tanks, or maybe to many idiots were running out of gas and complaining to Mitsu. as far as i know running out of gas only damages diesel engines

The cat. converter can be melted from the misfiring just before the engine stalls. But it probably wouldn't happen from running out of gas just once. I don't know what else could be damaged.Originally Posted by KODAM

I've gone 100 miles with the light on. I think you're being a little paranoid.
