New bulbs melted my connector!!!!

Hey Guys,

I bought Silverstar bright white H7 bulbs for my 05 Ralliart in August. Last week my low beams stopped working. I got it checked out and the service tech is saying the aftermarket bulbs have melted my "connector". He quoted me at $280 to fix. Anyone else run into this problem? Pretty choked because warranty won't cover it.

no.. I melted cheap ebay " blue HID " look bulbs before....but not my wiring... Dude... I live here in E town too.... I recommend plasma glow headlights or M tek bulbs.....Ive been running the plasma glows for the past 8 months with absolutely no reliability issues. I have ran just about every brand of bulb LOL... I have almost 90'000kms so trust me.....the plasma glows will work excellent. I used to sell PIAA products so I had PIAA bulbs in there too.... I honestly had nothing but issues with them burning out all the time. Go to auto toys and get some plasmaglows.

I'm a little confused. I just spoke to the service tech that worked on my car. He explains to me that they have had problems like this numerous times before. It is quite regular for the "aftermarket" bulbs to melt the connector's. I asked him what bulbs he would recommend. He said that they install mitsubishi at the dealership, but said they have had no problems with silverstars.

So I asked him, didn't I have silverstars in there. He says, "let me check". Comes back in a minute and says, "nope, you had sylvania's".

Now I am a little confused, aren't siverstar's made by sylvania? I'll double check as I still have the box in my trunk, just have to wait to get my car back.

Kinda makes me a little choked. Everyone else runs silverstars without a problem. I do, and it costs me $280.

Yep, Silverstars are made by Sylvania. I've run them in my car since August '04 with no problems.

It shouldn't cost that much to fix.

I've dealt with Sylvania customer service about a pre-mature burnt out filment in a H7... They ended up sending me 2 bulbs to replace the one. They're ok in my box... As far as the bulbs being too much for the connector, that's odd; they're made to run with stock watt, voltage, ouput ratings... So I don't what to tell you, but give Sylvania a call to see what they can do.

remember to never touch a bulb with your finger .the oil on your skin will make the bulb's life shorter. If it happens clean the bulb with denaturated alcohol !

I would have swapped in the stock bulbs before I took it back unless the bulbs were melted to the connectors really well?

I've noticed that most dealerships are quick to blame something you have done... My friend had a seat mount in his Neon SRT-4 break and they blamed it on his change of wheels......... Refused to repair it....

I'd like to hear their explanation of how aftermarket wheels would break a seat mount.

If you run Silverstar bulbs, in the correct wattage, 60 high/55 low I believe, and you have a problem with your wiring harness, that should be a warranty fix. Read up on the Moss-Magnuson Act. If a wear item, like a headlight bulb, needs to be replaced, and the Manufacturer does not provide them free of charge, you can not be penalized for purchasing an aftermarket replacement, so long as it conforms to OEM requirement specs. I believe the only spec in the owners manual is the correct wattage, 60/55. As long as you weren't using 100/80 bulbs, etc. the warranty should cover it. I would just be sure to indicate that you purchased the Silverstars because the original headlight bulbs burned out. Good luck.

U R Right. I used Silverstar for more than 2 years in my subbie and never had a prob. Check the voltage of the bulbs u used and if its 60/55 it has to be covered in waranty.

My gf had the same prob with a 00 Eclipse and they refused to repair the damage. I had to come down strong on the manager and they repaired the harnes.
