Who here drives a lot.
Who here drives a lot.
I know we have had how many mile threads but this isn't the point of my question. I got a promotion. My new position will double my driving, what I am wondering is from people who purchased a ralliart and then had to increase driving because of a move or promotion, did the fuel consumption put a big hurt on you. I know we don't have the most efficient cars for a 4 cyl but they are not bad.
I used to drive a lot. My commute was 120 miles a day, round trip. I also used to burn over $400 a month in gasoline just getting to work and back. I had to fill my RA up every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
Now I don't have that commute, and a tank of gas can last me over two weeks. My monthly fuel expense just dropped from over $400 to about $60.
Is that extra drive worth it?

I drive 60 miles round trip and the gas isn't that bad. I pay around $160 in gas but I rarely drive my car on the weekend. It all depends on how far your commute is going to be. For all we know, your drive is 5 miles now and is only going to increase to 10.
Also, while you figure out if the extra drive is worth it, don't forget that you are going to be servicing your car twice as much and putting twice as much wear and tear on it. That all adds up with that price too.

i just got a new job 3 weeks ago, the drive time is the same, however the milage is shorter by about 40%... also its not highway driving, i take one back road the whole way... and there are no stop signs... its 45 mph, 5th gear the whole way, so my mpg has been around 33-35 instead of the usual 30... all in all im paying about 70-100 less a month in gas

I drive isn't too bad, but If I took the RA I'd be avg. probably around 28mpg...in the xr I'm getting about 25 mpg, plus that one takes premium, which still only adds up to about $90/month for gas. So still debating with the wife on who should take which car, she's like a 5 min drive.

ehehe just the opposite for me. I've had my car nearly two years now and I'm just passing the 16K mark. It does help that I work three miles from home. I know its impossible for me to squeeze 400 miles out of a full tank, however shifting at 2500 rpms i drew 100 miles out of a little over a quarter tank, so I've been pretty pleased with the mileage, but I sacrifice being pleased with the drive. Good thing I have a nice stereo :*)
I drive in to work a few times a week, 65mi. each way, plus from the office i drive to the job site. When i drive in and come home i almost always have someone with me. So the HOV lane is my best friend. 65mph the whole way and the gas mileage is fine that way.
