1st to 2nd

Hi everyone I am new here.

I live in Aus and drive a Lancer ES (cheapest model), but the closest spec in the US seems to be the RA, so i believe it's appropriate to post here...

Question: which RPM do you guys shift from 1st to 2nd? I know the ratio difference between 1st to 2nd is the greatest among all gears, so does this mean I should shift even later or earlier, for maximum acceleration? The other day I need to switch lanes so I tried to get ahead of the Honda Jazz (1.5) on my left, unfortunately it seemed the Jazz's got CVT and it's pretty fast off the lights, i couldn't overtake so I had to slow down in the end. (pls don't laugh).

The real question is, how can I drive my manual faster than an auto? 1st gear is slow even at high rev, but shifting into 2nd early makes it slow too.. i am confused..

btw, the Aus spec lancer is a bit tamed comparing to the RA:

SOHC 2.4 4G69 MIVEC
115kw @ 5750 (156hp)
220nm @ 3500 (approx 158 lb/ft)
1255kg (ES, manual)

Fortunately it is a bit lighter as well. In australia the 0-100km time is documented as 9.8 sec.
Now 0-60 miles time I saw from an American sites is 7.5sec (RA)!! So I really dunno what to believe.... I checked the gear ratios, seems to be the same as well.

$1.38 AUD per litre. In the US it's cheaper.

well....to overtake you can just go ahead and redline the sucker.
If you think the 4G69 is slow from 1st to 2nd, get RRM's Underdrive Pulley. You will get to the top of 1st gear in NO time.

but such is life. after living in Venezuela you dont notice fuel prices as to fill a Chevy Tahoe's tank was cheaper than a burger and fries

I'm confused you have the VRX? Or the ES? VRX has the 4G69.... if you hqave an ES then it's probably only a 1.8 L ?

Maybe It's me thats confused.

Jack

I'm from Sydney and I own an 06 Lancer VRX. Okay.....a JAZZ, come on.... lol. (sorry had to laugh).

Okay so it's auto and it gets off the line, so I assume you want to get off the line quick as well even though you can, but perhaps need practice? IDK. Well if you got money left over, goto www.roadracemotorsports.com and purchase the Pulley Kit (Joe's Pulley). It's about $129 USD minus shipping but if you read all the great reviews (I also advise you too, so you can learn more), you should get one! Increases 6-7whp and low end torque and increases the engine resposiveness. I mean, thats like around 7.5kw extra for $129 USD. All Evom ralliart buyers recommend it and so do I (Especially if you combine it with RRM CAI)

IMO, shift later. Shifting too early will only cause a "lag" when shifting into second. As Im sure you know, 3500rpm is when Mivec kicks in, I usually (if going hard) take it right to 5500-6000 rpm, but that's me. Once you switch to second, expect that Jazz (Can't believe I'm even going on about a Jazz against a Lancer VRX (aka RA) to be seeing the rear end of your car.

He has the ES. Base model. In Australia, all the models have 4G69 even base models. It's kinda weird because most buyers expected peformance differences between the models but their are none. The only differences between base and the VRX is: (top of my head)

1. The dash (speedometer etc...) is red, ES is light blue.
2. McPherson Struts
3. Full Body Kit
4. 16" Alloys
5. Lowered 15mm
6. Chrome exhaust tip

Not sure what else..

Thanks for the info man.. now, when i rev it to 5000 in 1st, if I just shift fast without waiting for the rpm to drop (or match), the car jerks forward when I release the clutch, I guess that's the way it is. But indeed it is faster, at least sounds faster

My dash also lit in red, and I do have structs front and multi-link sus at the rear. You are right abt the rest though. The VRX in Aust also gets a different looking front (more like evo).

Hey Jack,

I always thought the base model was white faced? *hmm weird*..

Good stuff, but remmeber don't go hooning now cause you're revving higher haha. Keep it safe on the road.

Shifting fast is better, we don't want the rpm to drop if were going for it. Yes sounds much faster and meaner. Also, www.rpw.com.au sell short shifter kits for our cars for $200.00 if you're interested. That would help you as well perhaps..

Cheers!

VR-X has a shorter shifter than the ES already. Also a cool and innexpensive difference isthe strut brace to stiffen up the chassis.
Different interior styling, seats, etc. Was it worth spending almost another $10k? I dunno, I was a bit of a sucker, but I love the car and can't change past decisions so keep smiling.

You can take off in second pretty easily and once the RPM is into the mivec range it really goes. If I was really interested in taking off and outrunning someone I'd be looking at the road and not the tach so much, you should be able to feel/hear when to change, I expect you'd hit around 40-50km/h in first then into second and hang on
Its not academic, just drive and see what you are comfortable pushing your car to do

Yellow.
First one in Perth, had 15km's on the clock, first one besides people from the dealership to drive it.

Oh and a Honda Jazz should be no problem... hell most V6 Commodores should be no problem at least thats my experience, haven't been beaten to the speed limit by one yet.
