San Rafael Mitsubishi is doing things at the 30k service (for $741) that are not listed in the required service. For instance, there is no coolant change or transmission oil change, but San Rafael is not only changing the lubricant, but also flushing these systems. Overkill?

so you're from Norcal, huh? I don't exactly know where's San Ramon, but if you're willing to gor as far south as Santa Cruz, I reccomend calling Steven's Creek Mitsubishi (it's in San Jose). That's where I bought my car and they're really nice. They only pised me off once and that's when they said my oil change wasn't going to be for free because of that thing where you can only get it for free if it's been like 7500 miles or 6 months. SOme gay **** like that. I tried to get it after like one month because I happened to drive about 3000 during that time (rare occurence)
San Rafael Mitsubishi faxed me their 30k service list. First thing I noticed is that it is called "Mitsubishi Severe Maintenance - Major Service 30 000 (or at 32 mos.) / 90,000 (or at 96 mos.). Worth $741? And more to the point, needed. I just got this car and have little idea what may be wrong with it, so am thinking a very thorough look may not be such a bad idea. But, welcome your experience opinions. - Phil

There's nothing on that list that makes it worth $741 to me. The most complicated part of that list is inspecting the valve clearance, which only took me about 30 minutes. There's a write-up on here about it.
A lot of that stuff doesn't even apply to your car.
Lubricate all ball joints - they're not fitted with zerks, no way to grease them.
Inspect wheel cylinders - disc brakes all around, drum-in-disc parking brake is mechanical.
Top off battery fluid - maintenance-free battery.
Change/flush automatic transmission fluid - manual tranny, it's as easy as changing oil
Change transfer case oil (Montero) - wrong vehicle
Lubricate propeller shaft joints with grease nipple (Montero) - wrong vehicle
Replace spark plugs (non-iridium) - you have Iridium plugs, they're good for 100k
I also notice they only inspect the in-cabin air filter, they don't say they'll replace it. That's another $60.
If you're bent on having a dealer do the 30k service, go to one of the other dealers. If you want to save yourself a boatload of money and get to know the car better, you can find how-tos for the more complicated items on that list on here.

Pretty much. I pulled out my old one, and used my Dremel to get rid of the original filter media and some of the plastic. Then I cut a chunk out of a furnace filter, edged it with the cardboard edging I comes with, and fitted it into the original filter's plastic frame, then slid it in.
Which reminds me, I'm sure mine's due for a change. Any bets on how many dead bugs/leaves/dirt clods are in it?
"Check horn operation."
^^^ This is my favorite. Not sure I could do this on my own!
Mys is correct.....$741 is a rip for that list of service. I would personally take it to one of the dealers charging the $400ish price. That sounds more reasonable, and also sounds like they aren't throwing a lot of unnecessary things to do on their list of a 30k service.
......check horn operation. That just kills me.
"beep.....yup it works. That'll be $25"
