I personally wouldn't. To me, it's not enough of an upgrade to justify the expense. Looks like it'd cost you about $5,000 to upgrade, plus tax/title. If you're hell-bent on spending that money, you could put it into the car you have.

i had a 2003 Vw Jetta TDI only had it for a year . bought brand new in 2003. had lots of problems, paint started to peel off the first 6 months that i had it around the quater pannels, changed transmissions, also drivers window feel out inside the door, clips broke, also front bushings needed to be changed. i personally wouldn't by another VW . but my old man got 998245 kms out of his 86 jetta, back when the quality was good, just my 02 cents and opinion

i dont know about the GLi or Jetta, but as far as my experience with some cars from my friends, the VW have a extreme cheap interior construccion, every thing inside the car breaks

I wouldn't buy a VW newer than mid-80s. 60s or 70s, preferably.

A friend of mine has the 2.0T Jetta, he loves it. I've been in it many times and it's just not my style. I don't like the neon/multi-colored dash, and it seems to sit a little high.

I don't know, to me it still feels like a "chick car". I know this is a diff model than the one you're looking at, but even his 2.0T (200hp turbo) was slower than my RA before I put in the turbo.

Keep the RA!

I have several friends that had VWs over the past decade and they ALL had problems with them. Most of the problems were weird electronic gremlins that came and went. Problems with the cd changer, dash lights, fuses blowing for no apparent reason, etc. One of them also had three transmissions replaced in 60K miles.

I personally would never buy a VW...

I think This is a bias place to ask that question. But the difference in drive and feel should speak for itself!!! (Keep the RA, VW's can't keep up)

My bro had an '05 GLI. It's a very solid car. It depends on the difference to get into the GLI.

Positives of the GLI: it's an airbag with wheels; sweet gauges; trip meter; doors close with 'thunk'; easily chippable to get more power; turbo is nice; BBS rims; tires are really sticky; trunk and hood have hydraulic hinges.

Overall, it's a more grown up and sophisticated car than the RA. There's a reason why it costs $24k (they sell at sticker price) and our cars cost $18k (and sell for $15k).

Oh yeah. They are also very solid in a crash. My bro got rear ended HARD by an F-series. As bad as it was, there was no intrusion into the rear of the car. The trunk absorbed all the damage.

I wouldn't.....but that's just me. I'm just not a big VW fan. The only VW I like is the R32. I've ridden in one and they are really nice. But I still wouldn't have one.

VW's are heavy. I've raced my friends 1.8T GTI and basically we were dead even. That was before his GTI was chipped. So theres practically no performance upgrade unless you're going the modding route. Its gonna be a little cushier inside but currently VW's aren't very good with the reliabilty. German engineering is just a marketing ploy, it means that they try to over engineer everything until it breaks. A few years back they boasted about solid metal door hinges which is funny because not only does that add weight, but those cars had a routine problem of the doors sagging. I just don't see this trade as doing anything for you and will most likely put you upside down. If you want to spend 17k to get a nicer car, get a 3 year old used BMW.
