what causes this? (Gas gauge problem)
ok so yesterday i was driving home and then i notice my gas gauge dropping franticly, from half a tank to empty. then my check engine light came on. i disconnected the battery for a few min, reconnected it, my gas gauge did not move AT all. was in the position when the car is off. so i put a lil gas in it. the gauge kicked back in but then after a few min of driving dropped to E and then raised to half of a quater tank. so i filled the tank completely and now my gauge is stuck at full and wont move! what do i do?

I'm quite sure your sender is bad. Pull the sender from the tank and take a reading of the resistance while moving the float up and down. Sounds like halfway down the voltage is cutting off.
FUEL LEVEL SENSOR CHECK M1543001200557
Remove the fuel pump module and the remove the fuel level
sensor. (Refer to GROUP 13C, Fuel Tank P.13C-9.)
Fuel Level Sensor Resistance
1. Check that resistance value between terminals 2 and 1 is at
the standard value when the fuel level sensor float is
between point "F" (highest) and point "E" (lowest).
Standard value:
• Point "F": 3 ± 0.8 ohm
• Point "E": 110 ± 2.5 ohm
2. Check that resistance value changes smoothly when the
float moves slowly between point "F" (highest) and point "E"
(lowest).
3. If all checks are correct, go to fuel level sensor float height
check. If any check is not correct, replace the fuel level
sensor

You need to follow the instructions I posted, first. No point in replacing the sender until you're positive it's the problem.
Part number (04) MN120161
Part number (05+) MN139790
It'll run you about $90 shipped from www.mitsubishiparts.com
If you still have a warranty, then let Mitsu take care of it for you.

All you need is a multimeter (very useful thing to have on hand, especially if you're a homeowner.) Also need a socket set to remove the sender from the car. Should be pretty easy to get to, I think. Pull up the rear seat and there will be an access panel for it. First panel will be for the fuel pump, but there should be another one.
