Gear Changing - Grinding Issues.

Hey fellas, so I'm changing gears and every gear change it feels as though I'm slamming in the gears. Well, I'll be frank.. not technically slamming, but more so pushing the gears in place with more force than usual (even if I try to do it) Sometimes I can't even get the gear in, and have to wobble the gear stick in Neutral to ease it up.

Would it be:

1. Need to add grease to the ball that shifts the gears?
2. Open it up and take a look (Think this is a darn good idea )
3. Something wrong with my gear box?
4. Tranny fluid?

Suggestions, ideas or comments?

Thanks.

VRX, take a look at your clutch master cylinder, see if it leaks...get some one pumping it and look closely at it...check if it leaks

If the gears gets stiffer just dont drive it....thats how I messed my tranny up, by continuing to drive it like that

Yeah the gears are getting stiffer.

I'll check and open it up (just the short shifter, see if there is anything). I honestly don't think anything is wrong, I think it just may need some grease to smoothly gear in.

There was also this other thing, which I'll take a photo off which may be the cause.

Let me be the one to point out the first obvious thing I would check...Clutch Engagement point. If it's too high your clutch may not be fully releasing.

Probably need to get some bushings as well. I'm sick and tired of power shifting and being the gear either being stuck or feeling rough.

Honestly, the first thing I would do is change the transmission fluid. My gears were grinding just as you have explained and after changing the fluid the gears feel like new again.

You shouldn't have to change your gear fluid often unless you drive hard. I usually change mine every 6000 miles (10K kms?) But every 15000 miles should be fine. I'd check you clutch engagement point and adjust it down some.

yeah, mitsu recommends 30000 miles for our tranny, if you use a decent fluid you can get away with 30k. kreepa had issues with the master cylinder, it was leaking. there is more information on this in another thread.

remember, I am trying to help, so don't get offended. remember when I asked you a month or so ago about your shifting? you have a video camera right? go out and take a video, other than a three second driveby, maybe like 1 or 2 full minutes, where you accelerate hard and then deccelerate a few times. try to shift up and down a minimum of 10 times each in the video while you drive. It doesn't have to have video, just sound, so don't try and hold the camera

I'm not trying to say you can't drive, but everyone jumped my **** last time when I was trying to point something out to you in your new cam videos. I can't tell you how to fix the root cause if I don't know what the root cause is. you might be the root cause and not even know it.

In 1999 I bought my first manual tranny car. In 2002 I taught myself to rev match. In 2003 I put my first clutch block under the clutch pedal, and also started to experiment with clutchless shifting. In 2005(or maybe just last year ) I taught myself double-clutch shifting. I am telling you this because less than eight years ago I couldn't drive a stick, and I want you to know I wouldn't know what I know if I didn't make mistakes and have racing buddies to teach me things. do you know anyone that regularly tracks their car? it's the best way to learn

no one climbs in the car and drives like a pro the first time, and no one driving a stick for a year or two can claim to be a pro no matter how they handle the car. my buddy Ryan learned this the hard way, having his tranny rebuilt at 70k miles in a Honda, and destroying his ACT clutch in 20k miles.

make the vid, even if you think I'm a retard. at least if you make the vid and I tell you your great you can have a compliment on your shifting from someone half a world away

Nah I know what you mean Dan.

Honestly, I'm a decent manual driver, and I know I can be better and that there are other things I can do to improve. I actually watch video's to learn how to better handle the stick, because its the basics that actually improve someones gear changing.

I actually learned rev-matching online, and do it every now and then, especially on rolling starts... so thats no problem and gearing down. I know when I first owned a manual car when I downshifted I let the tranny do all the work, which was dumb on my part, but at least I'd admitting it.

I'm going to check out my shifter first tonight. If thats not the problem, then its going to definitely have to be the tranny fluid next on my dial.

Any other tips, fire at me!

practice, practice, practice. slow down when upshifting. you can't beat the tranny and expect it to last, that's what happened to Ryan. just because it goes into gear doesn't mean it was a good shift

describe your rev matching, I'm not gonna ask any specifics about it until you describe it to me so I don't lead your response.

I am getting ready to go to bed, but I'll check on you in the morning have a good night man.(or day there I would imagine.)

Hmm not to sure whats wrong, but on the topic of grinding, not to thread jack but last time I was at the track I was having issues with 1-2 shift missed it twice grinded bad, everything seems fine, but would a engine damper or hardened motor mounts help with that if its not driver error, I usually drive pretty good. I really dont like missing 2nd gear at 6500+
