Cooling fan runs off and on

The radiator fan on my car has started to have a mind of its own it would seem. I can start my car on a cold morning and the fan will cut on and then off again. I can often hear it at a light turn on and then back off and back on, without ever having time to speed up all the way or come to a stop. I'll get out of the car and the fan will turn on and off several times before I get in the house.

Any ideas where to look? I don't have a service manual yet and don't know which relay or sensor to test. Do I need to drop the big green for a Helm book?

Fan control unit, Mitsubishi part number 1355A053. About $50 from the dealer and takes 5 minutes to change yourself. It's the black box at the front of the engine compartment near the battery with 3 plugs. A few of us have had this problem.

Here are a couple of threads about it:

I had that problem as well and it is the Fan Controller. Apparently my intercooler pipes from the RRM kit had made a big dent on it... but after replacing the fan worked as normal. Also your fuel mileage should go back to normal.

Some Lancers have a recall for this.

replace this asap....if you don't and let it go , it will go out one day and your fans will stop, then your radiator will pop...but the good thing is u can get an evo 9 radiator for cheaper than a ralliart one...lol....it happened to me...

mine did this also it was the relay but it was also under warrenty not sure what kinda miles you have on the car. If you still have warrenty then it will cost you nothing to get fixed.

Did you buy the 1355A053 relay? I looked at a site that said it's only for the 2.0 motor. But if you tell me you put it in a Ralliart, I'd take your word for it and get it. I'm scared the relay will die and my fan will stop working and overheat badly.

This issue I had dealt with quite a long time ago, but I won't say it is a direct cause for terrible mileage.

I also don't know the part number, the dealership ordered it or something they had one in the parts room.

It really depends on how hard you drive man. Mivec ruins miles per gallon.

On my trip to work (16km each way) I generally keep it around 2000...the mileage seems to be wicked so far, but i got an app for iphone to actually track it so i'll start that next time i fill up.
