Short shift issue.
so for the first time ever i have had a problem with my shifter.
I just noticed this issue Sunday.
I first thought it was the cold that was causing this, but since its warm and sunny today (for February in Buffalo) and it is still sticking, I know its something else.
All of us who drive 5-speeds know that when your shifter is in gear, it stays in gear, and when it is out of gear, it springs back to "home" or below 3rd and above 4th.
my shifter doesn't want to go home. Instead it only springs about 1/2 way or less to home (from 2nd or first).
I was thinking it might be a bushing or a spring...
any ideas on what i should be looking for?

Im not so sure this is a lubricant issue...
the shifting is fine..
there isnt any added difficulty to move the shifter from gear to gear...
just doesnt spring to the home position.

check the short shifter... take it apart the spring within the setup that pulls the shifter back to the middle position might have broken, worn through, or something who knows..
I'm not sure if I understand the problem clearly, but If it's that your shifter dont want to keep engage or going out itself from the gear your problem is the shifter cable...
There'S is a shaft on the tranny and the shift cable hold on it like a little donut. It happens offen that the hole get rusted and jammed on the shaft so the ring around the donut start to turn with you engage and it apply a force... that make your shift going out...
To fix this problem you need a new shift cable... When you'll install the new, be sure to apply a lot of grease on the shaft...

If you put it into gear and it pops out that is your syncros......When it goes into gear the only thing that holds it into gear is the syncros/dog rings.....nothing else.....I am sure he is only talking about when he pulls it out of gear it doesn't go into the centered position......which is spring related.....or even possibly cables.....that is last resort....
In my opinion, before checking for synchro, I would just open the hood and ask for someone to move the shifter. Just watch the cable shifter how they move, it will tell you the problem. If the ring move, the cable need to be change. If the hole move on the shaft, forget the cable... as simple as that... It takes only 2 minutes compared to the removal tranny...

scenerio.
driving from one red light, and i go from first to second,
then get to another redlight.
car comes to complete stop.
I push the shifter into the space between 1 and 2.
it SHOULD go HOME (*)
but instead it kinda goes to point x.
so if i just push up, it doesnt go directly to 3rd gear.
I have to push it (if i even tap it, it goes home) home,
then up into 3rd.
like i said nothing shifting wise is sour,
(other than making sure im aligned with 3rd before pushing the shifter up)
Im really just asking what mechanisim bounces the shifter back to home (*),
unless they believe something else may be wrong.

I have to lube my kartboy ones or it gets stiff. I pulled the brass ones out due to corrosion possibility. When I installed my SS I put some of the bolts back together to tight and ended up with this problem though.

i bought the car with it...
and we all saw how well i adjust valve lashes...
so i might have to take it to a friend or something.
