Erm, then how did you get the pipe into the area behind the bumper?

Erm, you must be missing a splash guard, then, because that wouldn't be possible if the splashguard you're supposed to cut was present.

The area behind the fog light is completely enclosed, it's not possible to get the CAI in there without cutting the side splash guard that sits right below the battery.

Lol, you musta been missing that piece of the splash guard cause like otter said its not possible to install it with the splash guard there. Its like 3 piece splash guard or something. But if you somehow installed it and didnt need to cut the splash guard then it wont hurt anything. But i cant see how you could have though. I just installed mine about a week ago and the hardest part was removing the splash guards...even though it was easy.

fig. 16 says that i should cut a 5x5 opening in the mudd guard for the filter to pull in air...i dont know maybe im reading it, or something but i had to do no cutting of anything what so ever haha

when I installed my CAI, i just took out the splashguard piece instead of cutting it. The way the splashguard was designed is like perfect, u can just remove the piece thats in the way of the intake

You must've been missing the piece that needed to be cut. Also, for future ref, the CAI can be removed/installed without removing the front bumper.

I took out that piece instead of cutting it. No big deal, and no issues.
