Not really a firm answer. Stock exhaust is about 2" I.D. (2.125 O.D.) so 2.25" I.D. is actually quite a bit larger. IMO, 2.5" is overkill without turbo or a rather strong assortment of power mods.

actuaqlly otter, the stock one is 2 3/8, kind of an odd number, but its slightly bigger than 2.0, and a PRESS BENT 2.25 actually hurts performances...trust me, its what im sporting right now and it waqs faster with stock piping. So, If its PRESS BENT, u can go 2.5 no problem

got a 2.5 borla axleback and put down better power with the same mods as eclipse2lancer. I agree with otter though. 2.5 on little bolt ons is overkill

No way that's right. I know because I had to buy some exhuast adapters this past weekend, and a 2 1/8" adapter slipped perfectly over the stock exhaust, so its outer diameter is 2 1/8"

crap, thats what I meant 2 1/8, sorry got the numbers mixed up. But seeing as the stock one is mandrel bent, a press bent 2.25 in counterproductive, believe me, it has been my problem for more than a year, so I know what Im talking about, the car just hangs after 5 k fighting to redline on the higher gears

I wonder what the RRM catback is... dunno the difference between bends but okay.

I personally only have bolt ons and don't want to go Forced Induction so a 2.25 was fine for me. Right now I have the RRM downpipe and catback exhaust with no cat. converter... A bit annoying and tinny when its cold but it sounds nice just coasting around. I might throw a cat on it sometime but right now I don't have the money to throw around until after my 60K service...

Yep....my exhaust is all stock. CJ98 dyno'd a bit higher than I did. Downpipe is the real restriction in the stock exhaust.

I would hope that, for the cost, RRM's is mandrel bent. Kreepa has a great point, though, 2.25 would only be an improvement if it were a mandrel bend exhaust. For press bent, you'd have to go with 2.5.

Sorry for a pseudo-hijack....
I'm having a custom turbo kit made for my car right now, and there was some discussion between the fabricator and myself as to what diameter to use for the turbo-back. In a turbo setup, the dynamics are totally different than N/A, insomuch that with N/A some backpressure is good; with a turbo, the more free-flowing, the better. Touching on what you were saying bruce, regarding the sound. Just as a tuba has greater potential for a "warmer" timbre* versus a trumpet, would a 3" exhaust have the similar potential over a 2.5"?

*For those who don't speak band geek, timbre is tone/quality of sound/resonance/etc.

Blackraven, if your car is turbo it won't sound nearly as bad as mine does. From what I know you could probably run an evo exhaust.

My exhaust is tinny because i'm getting a very high pitch resonating sound which would be probably be worse if it were a 2inch exhaust. I think if you ran a 2.5 inch exhaust it would be deeper and such but being Forced Ind. you'll probably sound better altogether. I don't know of any turbo RA's that run a 3inch exhaust.. or at least I haven't looked into finding one.
