Blown up muffler

I guess this is the downside to having 2.4 liters of NA 4 cylinder fury

Anybody else have a magnaflow blow up like this? It was the first mod I did to my car, so it's got about 102,000 miles on it. While driving home today, the exhaust started making some god-awful rattling/clanking noises. Sounded like an old jalopy every time I got on it. Pulled the muffler off and found this. I haven't cut it open yet, but I'm guessing either a baffle came loose or it sucked up a rock.

It's sooooo tempting to shake out the gravel, wrap it with tons of muffler tape, and throw it back on the car. At least until I can find another one to buy.

toss your stock setup on there for now and see if you can get a cheap magnaflow (they sell that model on ebay for like 100$) and replace it that way.. Shouldn't cost too much to weld it on at a shop since its just replacing it not fabricating a new setup.

My axel back is still shiny... I've had it on for about 2 years now too.

If I don't find a used one by next week, that's what I'll be doing. I really need it back on the car. The stock muffler feels like I put a cork in my exhaust

It was horrible. Based on the amount of gravel in the muffler, it's probably been like that for awhile, but I didn't notice until it blew through the fiberglass baffling.

Know anyone local who can weld? That's easily repairable. The metal didn't rust away, it just blew the welds.

BTW, how much louder was it when you switched from stock to RRM axleback? I'm still running stock exhaust, don't really want to go much louder.

This might finally be my excuse to invest in that MIG welder I've always wanted I've thought about repairing it, but if the baffling is blown it won't make a difference

The axleback on an otherwise stock exhaust isn't loud at all. It's obviously a bit louder than stock, but really not by much.

anything with a decent brand behind it will be ok for you, myszkewicz. in my experience it is much more quality related than anything else; the magnaflow free flow muffler I got sounds ten thousand times better than the POS free flow I bought off ebay. granted this one is oval and longer, but it still shouldn't be that much of a difference.

Now that I can see inside the magnaflow, I was surprised to see how simple it is. It's the same construction as a basic resonator - just a perforated pipe wrapped in fiberglass. The majority of the oval has nothing in it.
