Under-hood cooling option

I was wondering if anyone on evom has ever elevated the back of their hood with washers in order for heat to escape from under the hood (by rushes of air from the front pushing out hot air to the back opening)? I've searched these forums and googled...couldn't find anything about it since i don't think there's a specific name to it..?

2 of my friends did it to their cars. One had a sr20det on his 240sx and said it helps cool the turbo. And my other friend did it to his tC so his sri could suck in cooler air as air rushes in and pushes warm air out to the back.

In my opinion whats the difference that 1 washer makes or even a couple? I dont think it would be a large enough gap, and if you put too many its gonna look out of line.

i don't think you could raise it enough to make a noticable difference...if so it would look like the hood was wrecked. you have a CAI so don't need it anyway...personally i've never heard of it and if it worked, 100k sport cars would be doing it.

I don't think 2-3 washers will do much as far as raise the hood much...

I haven't seen anybody do this to a Lancer. It is a beneficial mod if you're having a heat issue, and if you can get the hood up at least a half-inch, but I think it'd look terrible with the Lancer's body style. Better idea to install a hood vent or buy a vented hood.

Not sure additional cooling is really needed unless you live in a desert and are stuck in traffic a lot. Or have increased the compression, or running a turbo (which in that case you should have an intercooler so it wouldn't matter).

Highest intake air temps I have seen in the summer (90+ degree day) stuck in traffic are in the 150-160 degree range. Most of the time the inlet temp is about 10-20 degrees warmer than ambient at highway speed. (I have a scangaugeII plugged into the OBDII port).
....and yes, I have a CAI, but I don't think it matters too much since the IAT sensor is closer to the TB. Maybe a degree or 2. Could be a good experiment if I had a SRI and time to do it.

the biggest difference should be at idle anyway, since there is no airflow aside from the intake air. the CAI would draw ambient air(close enough anyway) and the sri would draw engine bay air.

I read an SCC mag where somebody asked the same question, the answer was that the area where the hood meets the windshield is a relative high pressure zone, so by lifting the back of the hood it will be more likely to rush air in instead of out (like the cowl induction camaros, etc.). It means that in extreme conditions, you would have some cooling issues since air would not be flowing through the radiator (it likes to move from high press. areas to lower press. areas, so if the radiator sits between 2 high press areas, there wouldnt be any flow through it). They recomended an Evo 8/9 type of hole with some sort of gourney flap in front of it to create a low press zone just above the opening.

what if the car has a sri, would a cowl hood help to bring in cool air into the engine? would the radiator still have trouble cooling the engine?

the point of a radiator and the point of a sri are two different things. the raditor cools coolent to prevent warpage, and any form of air inductors job is to bring in air into a piston, lets not put the two together

so a cowl hood would circulate air into an engine bay, so thus if you had a sri, it would get some of that cooler air. so why would the radiator change in any form of fashion?
