Unhappy Gas lid / cover broken

I was at a gas station and had just filled up the tank when I closed the gas lid (not the twist cap but the lid mind you) I heard a click and lo and behold I couldn't get it open..try as I might I couldn't and I don't want to use a screw driver or other cause I am afraid to scratch the paint (I am very **** about my car ) anyway I was wondering if you guys have any advice on how to open it and fix it..I am reading the car brochure now and if all else fails I could go to the dealer but I am afraid it's gonna get expensive...see the little floor "gas button" that u lift to pull the gas lid open works..it's just that nothing happens...all you hear is click...so any help? Ideas?

my evo did that, if its the same, use a credit card or sumthin that wont scratch the lid, and have somebody pull the gas release and use the card to open the lid. most likely its the spring that pushes the lid open. its about $1.60 to replace...

Yeah, have someone hold up the release while you pry it open with something soft (credit card, or wrap a screwdriver with a rag) then, if nothing's broken, lube everything in there so it doesn't happen again.

theres not really anything to lube and that would just collect more dirt. its most likely the spring or if it doesnt open very easy with a card, go in through the trunk and see if the cable is still attached.
