Ticking sound from engine (not what you think it is..)
Well I've been avoiding posting a thread on this, well because everyone will assume I'm thinking about the lifters or whatever and need a valve lash adjustment or something.
Well I think this is completely unrelated to it and started about 2000 miles of having my tranny pulled and rebuilt (again...
). What happens is when I'm in gear driving and I hit anything above 3000 rpms there's a ticking sound coming from somewhere around the shifter linkage setup or behind the dash.
The ticking is slower at about 3200 rpms and when i go to 3500 rpms it gets faster. By then my exhaust over powers the noise however I know that its still there just faintly heard. This sound doesn't occur when I rev the engine or hold the engine at 3000 rpms without being in gear or with the clutch down. My question is this following, I have driven the car before the rebuild and it didn't make this sound. I checked for loose bolts, brackets and cotter pins/etc and have found nothing. I looked underdash thinking the locking nut of the clutch adjustment was loose and it wasn't. Anyone else have any ideas as to what to check since I didn't pull the tranny myself wouldn't know what it would be. My thoughts that it might be some loose clip on the windsheild or the pillars but its definitely not coming from that direction and I cannot repeat the sound when going over misc bumps in the road. This sound is driving me crazy...
When it gets warmer hopefully sunday I plan on ripping apart the shifter linkage bushings to regrease them and I guess then I'll poke around a bit more.
