Trying to lower underhood temps, question about stock headers.

I'm trying to get my under hood temps as low as possible. Last time I popped the hood to clean my intake filter, some of the rubber parts were melted.

Soooo I was thinking of getting the wrap for the headers.

But i have a question before I do that, because I'm short of money at the moment.

Would it benefit me to remove that ugly heatshield that covers the headers? It seems that its made to actually remove heat from the heaters and disperse it into the engine bay....

Any help would be appreciated.

Annnd any tips to lowering temps. BTW I have an SRI thats right behind the battery.

If your filter is melting then it's too close to your exhaust. I haven't heard of anybody else having that issue. If you remove the heat shield, without either wrapping or coating the headers, then you risk melting the fans/related parts.

i ran my ra for over a year with no heat sheild on the header without any issues

as for raising the back sounds like a decent idea, just toss a couple washers between the hood and latch?

I ran my Mirage with no heat shield for a year and no problems. It might fade the hood if its carbon fiber. My friends done that. I wish I could find headers that would let me use my shield, that would be great.

Get an evo hood with the vent on it, if it will fit.. Also, removing the heat shield will melt things faster, that is why it is called a heatshield.

evo hood will not fit, you could get a evo STYLE hood thats vented, or one that has the evo vent and then the ram style vent as well, get a lil air pushed to that intake as for raising the hood please do a how to write up that would be cool

wrapping the stock header isn't a bad idea and relatively inexpensive compared to jethot coating or something, but thats my 2 cents

Wells I went to ace to get some washer to raise my hood, came back out, popped it, and installed a couple of washers on each bolt.

After looking at the gap under the hood, im thinking... WTF?

Theres no gap!

Then I realized, theres a rubber weather stripping that makes sure the hood is sealed form the windshield.

So I removed that.

My car seems to be running cooler, because after a few miles in the heat, it didnt burn me when id touch my intake tubing.

Mission accomplished!

Sorry for no pictures. Cameras broken, but its sooo easy!

P.S. When you raise your hood, there WILL be gaps on the sides and they'll be real ugly....

BUT.

All you'll have to do is force them down. Put your weight against the corner of the hood to make it flush with the fenders once again.

I'm also in the process of creating a wall between the engine and intake so it sucks air from under the car and behind the battery. As of right now, i shoved a giant foil pan in there, and its working wonders!!!! My engine is cool as ****.

Not even some crappy cell phone pics? I'm really curious to see your set up here, I too live in a very hot area and I've got an SRI.
