Drive Clean Test (Ontario)

This is my first time doing a smog test on my car, and I have no idea what to expect. Does anyone know if they check anything else during the test? I am debating if I should remove my piggyback before testing. Besides that what can I do to increase my chances of passing?

go for a joy ride before you show up, get everything hot...if my 89 ranger can pass, you can pass....there's fuel additives you can buy but i don't think it will be necessary...if you don't have a catalytic converter...get one..lol

welcome to southern ontario

Make sure your check engine light is off. Cannot pass with it on - gotta fix whatever is causing it.

Our friend here is correct - most junkers can pass, even my retired neighbours oil-burning rich-running POS contractors van. A buddy used some of that pour-in additive that claims to make you pass emission test no matter what, and it worked like a charm for his piece of scrap iron.

Do not worry - if you fail for some reason, you get time to fix it and bring it back for retest.

sorry to change topics a bit, but if the piggyback is acting up, FYI the hackish reflash is awesome... no cel... power...

first you shouldn't have removed the piggyback/reset the battery without figuring out what was throwing the CEL in the first place. now you have no idea what it was and could have been completely unrelated to the piggy. did you delete your catalytic convertor at all? if my car can pass yours definitely can lol

Don't bother with the additives. Everyone I've talked to (e-test operators) have said they do nothing, in a lot of cases when you add it the results get worse. Since it's not expensive go get it e-tested and if it fails then worry about needing crazy stuff like new cats and exhaust systems. I usually make sure things like sparkplugs are in good shape before heading in. I've found a lot of aftermarket headers cause failures because they don't allow the cat to stay hot enough. Cat temp is 95% of the battle.

Michael, might wrapping the header with insulating fabric tape keep the exhaust gases hot enough to make the cat work properly?

When upgrading my exhaust system i kept getting the P0141 code which I believe is the cat inefficiency code. I upgraded to a highflow cat which was why my sensor was thinking it wasnt working properly. I fixed that with a product I bought online

I done my emission test it no issues. with the CEL I got it too but it p0420 aka cat insufficency which is caused by my aftermarket high flow cat. This can be tricked by getting a CEL eliminator which being out the post cat o2 sensor, tricking it to sense less, and cooler exhaust temp= no CEL.

I don't see why you'd have reason to worry about this. You still have a cat and the rest of your emissions devices are untouched. Piggyback won't matter since testing isn't don't at WOT.
