Valve tick at low rpms?
Valve tick at low rpms?
Hey guys,
I have this ticking coming from the engine, sounds like the valves, between about idle to 1800rpm, when accelerating from a stop or otherwise. Seems to completely disappear at around 2000rpms and above.
I set the valve lash (car has 91000km on it now) but that didnt change it much.
The car is due for a timing belt change in 5000 more km's.
Any ideas?

It's loud enough to hear it with the windows down. And yes, it was adjusted hot.
I have no idea. Sounds mechanical to me. Sounds like the valves.
Are you sure your not hearing the fuel injector pulse ? It sounds very similar ....
i don't know man, if it's really loud it could be valves/rockers, but if it's pretty minor it could be normal...as i said mine has a slight tick, and i've had my head completely rebuilt within 20k, and it ticked from day one, i did the valve lash the day after first start-up after the rebuild.

Wanted to update this thread following me doing the 96'000k service.
The valve tick has completely disappeared since changing the timing belt. So, anyone also having valve noise/ticking at low rpms, it appears to be signs of an ageing timing belt (provided that the valve clearance is within spec).

Well, I didnt just do the timing belt. I also changed the water pump, and all pulleys.
Look at this thread for the parts:

Cost me around $750.

theres 2 special tools for the timing belt change...one is required(pulley holder tool) the other is very helpful(threaded rod) but not required...specially if ur doing the tensioner
i did my belt, pulleys, tensioner, water pump(2x..grr) w/ gasket and thermostat(also 2x...grr) at about 100kmi...the parts cost me around $350 and i did the work myself w/ otter at his house...took us about 3 hours or so if i remember correctly(plus the time it took us to drive out to parts store and buy 2nd t.stat)
i wanted to do the valve lash too, but i forgot to order a valve cover gasket...and figured id just do it myself later...(about 25kmi later...and still not done..lol...still meaning to do it tho..)
i can def. hear the valves tick but it drives just fine for now, no roughness or anything..maybe ill just get to the valves when i do the next belts...lol(if it doesnt drop or bend a valve somewhere in the meantime..lol)

I had my caliper out and saw the pulley and this thread earlier so incase someone is up for making a tensioner tool out of some thicker solid gauge wire here are some helpful measurements.

Hole to hole closest O< >O 10.78mm
Hole to hole farthest >O O< 17.40mm
Hole 3.40mm wide
Hole depth 7mm
Dacib and I made one with a solid aluminum tube bent like a staple and a flathead screw driver it worked just fine.
