about timing kits

So i guess my 60k maintenance bs is right around the corner, and i was wondering if aftermarket timing belt kits would work. I know keithislegit and couple people already made a thread about this, but i was wondering if this would be a good solution for not spending $400 on oem parts from mitsu dealer.

I was thinking of buying the gates timing belt component kit: two belts, two tensioners, and one idler. (It says it doesn't come with cam. tensioner hyd. assy, do i need one?)

and gates DriveAlign Premium OE Automatic Belt Tensioner
http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,ca...4L%2BL4%2BSOHC

i'm not really thinking about replacing the water pumps yet, is there anything else i need?

total cost is about $160 with shipping to canada+$200 labour at canadian tire.

keep in mind that since theyre aftermarket that the chance of failure could be that much higher. the TB and tensioners are not exactly something you want to fail on you prematurely or else there goes your entire engine

well gates has a pretty good review on their product, and it says they have 12000miles or 12month warranty.

Is it not always best to replace the water pump at the same time? Something I have always done.

its a good idea just because you're already in there and no sense in tearing it apart a second time for preventative maintenance. just replace it when everything is apart to make it easier on yourself as well as insuring that you're not going to have an overheating problem due to lack of coolant

I have heard good things about the Gates belts and I know a few people using them in GSX Eclipses (Talon TSI). Gates do have a good reputation so I'm going to say your safe with using them.
I would definitely replace the water pump. I didn't even think of it when I was getting my timing done so now all I can do is wait. Save yourself the headaches.

I had a question, what is the difference between timing belt tension adjuster and automatic belt tensioner? I went to mitsu dealership today and on the timing belt set it didnt have the automatic tensioner and had timing belt tension adjuster. Is it the same thing?

the auto tensioner, is a device that automatically provides the proper tension to the tensioner arm, the timing belt tensioner is the pulley/bearing on the tensioner arm...

You'd be silly to buy the parts from the dealer...mitsubishiparts.net if you're staying with OEM parts.

When you by the timing belt tensioner, and auto tensioner, are they both one time use items?

yes, you need both. and why do you need cam and crank seals? you only need those if yours are leaking, and you have to take the crank and cam out to put them in...

keithislegit, they can be reused probably for one timing belt cycle depending on their condition, but i would not recommend it...

FWIW, I reused my auto-tensioner and did not replace my water pump at the 60k service. I replaced both belts and all pulleys. For the 120k service, I replaced everything. This is the same cycle I used on all my DSMs, with good results.

yea i didn't know if i wanted to change everything for the 60k mile maintenance too. MY local mechanic quoted me $220 for parts and labor. It sounds way too cheap, but ill ask the guy what parts his gonna be changing. If he shows me a ****ty parts, ill just order the gates timing belt kit.

Correct me if im wrong, but if you are from Edmonton your car should be in KM not Miles.

if its KM then its 100,000 km till you need a timing belt change. Look at your service manual just in case.
