Manual or Auto Part II
Manual or Auto Part II
Now that he asked what transmission you had in your car. My question is what transmission will 9 out of 10 last longer then the other?
Automatics?
or
Manuals?
I know it all depends on the driver but I'm sure one car will generally last longer then the other. Will an auto outlast a manual or do manuals last longer?

I don't know about the modern trannies, but my 66 mustang has 288,000 miles on the origanal tranny. It is showing wear but no problems yet (knock on wood).
Hopefully my RA will outlast my mustang.

I had an auto 2002 eclipse ....even with the sportstronic shifter they give you....it really is nothing like the control of a true manual.
I have had 2 manual cars now and I love them both..wouldn't go back to auto unless they didn't make a manual (some cars now don't have the option...that sucks)
I think everyone should get one manual car in their life and then choose from there...My first I didn't know how to drive stick which forced me to learn on my MR2 SPYDER...I got the car and learned as I went (help from friends who drive manual helps also)...haven't driven an automatic since...

In general (read: GENERAL), automatic transmissions from Japan seem to be not as reliable as their manuals. This is from my own as well as my mechanic's experiences. Of course there are exceptions to every rule, such as the auto in the last gen Supra.
If you need more advice to decide, look at it this way. If you want total control of your car, get a stick. If your lazy and have alot of stop and go traffic to contend with on a daily basis, go with an auto. I have an auto on my OZ, and I wish I would have gotten a manual. But I dont dwell on the subject. An OZ Lancer is slow, manual or auto. The auto doesnt hurt me too badly for autocross, and thats all I really care about......

manual is definately more dependable..by this i mean you have a lot less parts on a manual than an auto. Manual is more direct, with auto transmission, there's very little you can control but how you drive can determine the life of it..
Even if you **** up something on manual, it's usually a simpler, cheaper fix than an auto transmission.

I'm not sure about reliability, but cost os definately lower for manual...I had an 88' merkur Scorpio, 253,000 kms, auto...drove like a dream, but then the tranny started giving me problems...it would've cost me more to fix the tranny then it did to buy the car, so I made the only choice I felt I had and sold it to a used car dealership...I miss that car....a Saturn just isn't the same...but, now I've found the RA, and I've always wanted a stick...now, to hold myself over with school till May...hehe
Auto will last long as long as you change its tranny fluid or not manually shifting it. My auto lasted me 96K before a truck killed my car . . . I rate my tranny as 8.4 out of a 10. By then, I had enough TQ to chirp 2nd to 3rd (somewhat common occurance)and 3rd to 4th (rarely) at WOT on my Mitsu. As long as you don't hear thumps during its shifting, downshifting, or moving between gears after reverse, you're okay. Otherwise, you're going downhill on the TQ converter. The Big 3 auto tranny don't last beyond 65-75K before thumping is common.
Manual will last as long as you don't burn your synchros. Otherwise, just replace your clutch.

remember most auto trannies have over 2000 parts. that alone makes me wonder what can go wrong. I have an auto, i like my auto, but i think it all depends on the model of the tranny which will last longer. a built 4L60E will be damn near bullet proof, while some manuals can break easily. there is no hard fast rule regarding which is more reliable i dont think however i would choose manual in this case
I think it has a lot to do with how its built
I think I general a stock manual will out last a stock automatic considering both are driven the same and maintained. As for my choices of which I like better. Well if I'm not going to do any fast driving and a lot of city driving I think a automatic is the most convienent, when it comes to zooming around cornors and controling the deceleration of the car you can't beat a manual, and when it comes to a drag car there is nothing better than a heavly built automatic with a manual valve body and a ratchet shifter. I suppose you could consider the last one a cheat (it is automatic) but unlike normal automatics or even electronically contoled ones as soon as you move the ratchet shifter foward the next gear is there, nothing is faster. Well I guess a pull lever trans is as fast, but it's pretty much just another type of manual automatic. But this is just my opnion.
I love my new manual for purely silly, personal reasons...
1. I can't eat, drink or smoke at the same time as shifting gears. (Not that I'm smoking in my new car - at all - you'll see me at the side of the road in a snowstorm first!)
2. It helps keep you awake in the middle of the night having to shift. (After 10 years with my 1992 Sunbird GT automatic, I know wherefor I speak!)
3. My girlfriend can't drive stick - less chance of me being left behind to drive her 1997 Cavalier 2.2!
