Push to Start

..........no, no, no, i don't need to pushmy car to start it.

Has anybody installed a push to start in their RA? Seems pretty easy, but was looking for some verbal support on the subject.

This guy has one, but I am not sure if I would put mine in the ashtray.

Im pretty sure Ive seen one on here somewhere dont remember where tho... they had a push start button to the right of the steering wheel on the dash. Ive looked into it before but most guides I saw you still had to turn the key anyway, so it seemed pretty pointless... Do you have directions for a different setup?

A lot of oem push-to-start ignitions need a "smart key" - the fob that the car senses is the owner's key and allows the person in the driver's seat to securely start the car. The smart key acts as a full on transponder that does not need to be inserted into the ignition cylinder (though there can be backup keys "hidden" in the fobs).

The problem with these kits is that cars with what is now considered a conventional ignition (like ours) still need to incorporate the actual key into system for the push button to work.

Essentially you would insert the key into the ignition cylinder all the way to get whatever tumblers arranged, and the transponder chip in the key itself will disarm the immobilizer.

The kit might include something to prevent the "Start" function of the ignition from working. I'm assuming when the key is in "Run" - you could hit the button and the car would turn over.

Don't quote me on that, but that's my impression.

They're neat I suppose, but I don't see myself ever using one.

Ferraris need their key inserted in order to start (no smartkeys there). People ive read about use s2000 push start buttons. They're a nice gimmick IMO.

I was real interested in this too and did a lot of research: which parts to buy, how to wire, what to take apart, etc. At the end of the day I sat looking at the result and it wasn't worth it, just gimmicky like rdc says. I believe (not recall, Crans ) that decades ago button push came first, then key start was invented and was considered a leap forward. IMO don't bother.

Yes sir, push to start was on old cars. I rolled my eyes when I heard it was a feature now .
I experienced it in a Morris Minor as a boy one Saturday.

i work at a dealer...and for a while we got a used honda s2k and it was the dumbest thing...dunno if stock or modded but u had to put the key in, turn it like any other normal ignition, and then press the start button(wich dumbly was on the left side of the steering wheel on the dash)...also to shut the car off you could turn the key off like normal, or press the start button again(it had printed on it "start/stop"

dumbest setup ever IMO...
...i heard from the salesman that took it in as a trade, that apparently the presious owner autox'd it some...so he put in a few mods(aluminuim radiator, lowering springs and a set of "racing" wheels+tires)...but nobody ever found out if the button was OE or not...and the guy who bought it after never came back...but he said he had big autox plans for it too...

Yes, pictures would be awesome!

Even though this might seem 'gimmicky' to some people, I'm not gonna lie, this would be pretty sweet to have.

i didint know u can turn key to start in a s2k...
the 2 ive driven you turn the key THEN press the start/stop button only....
and to turn off you can either turn off the key or press the start/stop button...

maybe they both had issues w/ the "normal" turnkey start switch..?
