temp control lights work randomly

so i started having this problem maybe a year or two ago now, the light (the entire temp control, fan speed and the head/feet/defrost selector)is usually off when i start driving and will randomly just turn on at any interval 10,30,60 min and stay on for however long it wants and possibly turn off again, usually 30min or more or when i next start the car itll be off again. This is most noticeable at night cause during the day i usually keep all my lights (hids, dailies, parkers, internals) turned off and well its day. The ac, rear defrost and the other button lights in the middle still work fine but the a/c does take a few pushes to turn on sometimes.

i do have one bulb in behind the temp knob burnt out, think this would cause the random operation intervals? i havnt bothered to try and replace it yet cause i was told you need a special tool to remove the bulbs and mitsu wanted like 100$ to do it.

You really don't need a tool to pull the bulbs. It's quite easy lol just got to be super careful to not crack the bulbs when pulling them out.

they're a decent size, you can grab a hold of them....make sure it's seated fully, if not, the socket may be loose on the board, who knows..
