Okay guys, I finally bought a Kenwood KDC-MPV619 head unit (used) and am now ready to install it (speakers will go second, the deal was to good to pass on).
So what now? Does anyone know how to remove the dash board piece (and the stock HU) without wrecking the whole car? Will I need special connectors? Will I have to cut the stock wire connector(s) off or will I be able to use some kind of standard adapter(s)? I like clean installs... don't care much for electricians' (sticky as hell) black tape.
I can soldier, use heat shrink insulation... but I'd rather have a cleaner (plug & play) install if at all possible.
Anyone with insights on that???

Hey, it's me again! Surprise, surprise, right??
Anyways, here's a great write-up in the Reg. Lancer forums, step by step to install the HU. Very thorough.

should answer all your q's....good luck man!

I'm on a roll here! It took less than 1/2 hour for me to figure everything for the install (thanks to the above-mentionned tutorial, the thing was a breeze!
)... but now I need a good adapter to connect the stock wiring to the after-market deck. Anyone knows who does them? Any links to sites I could get that from?
It's kinda frustrating, it all went so easily that I didn't have time to plan for the adapter... so now the deck sits in the car, unplugged.
By the way, I think it fits really well! I wonder why the guys who bought Pioneers got fitment problems. It's a good thing I got the Kenwood then...
By the way, is the back connector of my after-market deck standard? I suppose it is... but who knows.

For non-infinity systems, www.crutchfield.com has them.
www.soundgate.com has them for the Infinity systems.
If you have a stock system, call around town to audio install places (local shops, circuit city, best buy, etc) and check with them. They more likely than not have adapters in stock.

Thanks man! I found something on Crutchfield... but I thought the adapter would have two plugs, one for the head unit and one for the stock harness. It doesn't seem to be the case... so I guess I'll have some soldering to do anyway.

What is the problem with the fit? It needs a special braket that can't be found aftermarket??? That sucks! It's not as bad as the Mazda 3 head-unit racket, but even then, they could have made it a bit more standard... So I might have to go to my uncle again to have some custom plate done... I hate asking other people to help me out (exept you guys, I have no pity!
).
Well, at least now I know what size I'll need to get for the rear install. Anyone know the sizes for the other speakers? I guess the fronts would be 5", but I have no clue for the tweeters
Delta: I didn't get the Infinity package, as I didn't think it was worth the price they asked for it (but that's just my personal opinion). I would have taken the sunroof though... I hate those ridiculous packages. I also wanted the side airbags, but guess what: I had to buy the S&S package first!!!
I am on the market for a new head unit (so I can play MP3 CD-ROMs), but I also consider the stock speakers to be the weak link on my current setup. As I was a sound technician for 3 years way back then, I know that the most important components in a sound system are the speakers. Since I don't want to shell out more than 500$ for the whole thing (HU and speakers), it looks like I'm in for some big compromises in the sound quality department. I might also wait for now and only upgrade the rear speakers... do the fronts next year.
I never liked Alpine components because I found them to be a bit too "tainted" for my taste... but it's been a while since I listened to anything they make. So I think I owe it to myself to go out and listen to some stuff...
Thanks you guys!
