Exclamation When Does MIVEC Kick In...?

So all these variable valve timing things like the famous, but over-rated VTECand I-VTEC that you feel in the higher RPM's, and the VVTL-I on the celica that you feel on the higher RPM's, so where does MIVEC stand? I know it works in the lower and mid RPM's, but is it like the civic or celica? The car has a nice grunt and low and mid, is that MIVEC? Just wondering, cuz I wanna yell out MIVEC!!! as I pass a sI

That should help.

Short answer, 3500rpm.
Excellent article though! I never knew a few things.
So before 3500, the 2 intake valves are opening at different lift for high swirl in the combustion chamber. After 3500, the T lever that is being moved by the center lobe is engaged and both valves open more and for a longer period of time. A very neat system.

Variable valve timing isn't "all that"
There have been high lift cams since, forever. You know a car has a cam like that when it idles like poop. You know a car has a mild cam when it has a smooth idle. What variable valve timing does is allow a car to have a mild cam (at idle/low rpm) for good fuel economy and smooth running and also allow it to have high lift/duration (at high rpm) for maximum air/fuel flow and power. Prior to VTEC, you could have one, or the other. Now we can have both.
It's not like a VTEC/MIVEC engine is far superior to anything without variable valve timing. But it helps economy (at low rpm) and power (at high rpm).

I always thought MIVEC was on all the time ( except maybe at idle ) . Adjusting at every rpm for omptimum power and economy.

MIVEC uses 2 cam profiles. The engine switches to the higher cam at about 3500rpm. its not constantly dynamic or anything. just 2 profiles.

I'm just happy that I can explain it better to people I talk about cars with!

Nope, there's 3 cam profiles. The low lift and medium lift profiles are both used from idle-3500rpm. One valve is opened a little and the other is opened medium ways. After 3500rpm, the T arm engages and both valves operate on the high lift lobe. Below 3500rpm is for economy, above 3500rpm is for power/flow.

Also it should be noted that Mivec only operates these new valve timings on the INTAKE valves...where VTEC uses both Intake and Exhaust valves. I thought this should be said. But knowing how ****ty my buddy's 04' iVTEC SI is...I'm not sure I would be impressed by this new info... :P
