ABS Light is on....time to replace pads?

Started up the car this morning, and my ABS light stayed on. Not really sure why, but someone told me that this may be because my brake pads are wearing thin. I haven't replaced the pads yet, and I just passed 50,000 miles this morning. Doesn't really seem like the brakes aren't working (they feel fine except for the wobble at high speeds when I brake), so is it just the pads needing to be replaced?

And if so, is replacing the pads a fairly easy DIY job? Thanks dudes.

Just the ABS light, and not the BRAKE warning light?

Sounds kinda fishy to me. Very worn pads can create a warning light, but I don't know if it would trigger an ABS warning.

You might want to check the ABS fuse and your brake fluid level, and if they're fine, to be safe, I'd get it to the dealer.

Pads, unlike shoes, are an easy DIY...but unless you have a floor jack or a full day to put into it, you'd be well off taking it to CarX or PepBoys. They're both pretty cheap when it comes to replacing pads.

I see that everybody in/around Chicago drives too much. I'm closing in on 43k myself.

Quite easy. I haven't actually DONE them on this car yet, but I've had the calipers off for painting, and didn't see a reason why this car would be any more difficult than any other. The calipers compressed down just fine with a C-clamp. The rear calipers don't even have the built-in parking brake tht needs to be screwed in.

I didn't look very close at the drum-in-disc parking brake, though. Those might be a little more challenging.

A FULL DAY?? Your nuts! lol

I've seen a full set of pads done in a couple hours. I suppose if your taking your time it could take ya 3 hours IF YOUR READING A HOW TOO BOOK. hehe

Its not hard dude...but it does help having a set of jack stands.

Have you tried checking the fuse?

replacing pads is really easy, just need a few tools and a set off jack stans and you could have it done properly in a few hours. if you end up putting new pads on ither get your rotors turns/ resurfaced or get new rotors lol. secondly your ABS light will not cause your car to not stop. just means your ABS system did not pass its check when you stated car up. i would check your pads, good way to do this is see if your pads are about as thick as the backing there on, if so then i would plan on replacing them soon. take it to the dealer though to make sure its not you ABS system. your ABS system runs checks on its self from the time you start your car till you shut it off, constantly.

Nobody should take more than an hour to replace a set of pads. The only time consuming part is jacking up the car and removing the wheels. Once the wheels are off, it only takes 5 minutes to change the pads per caliper.

Replacing brakes won't make your ABS light away.

Have it scanned and see what your code is.

when i hard brake or corner hard the parking brake light comes on. I recently went on some back roads and think maybe i knocked a sensor loose, cause it only goes on when the car is under moderate stress.

Your brake fluid in the reservoir is low. When you corner hard or brake on a dime, the fluid swichtes around the reservoir causing the sensor to read it low. Immediately causing the light to go on until the fluid settles again.

Check your brake pads. They might be on the low side.

What!?! Are you kidding me! 50k already! Man you drive way too much... I have about 20k on mine and it's driven everyday.

Yeah, just do it yourself man... and BTW, on the Prelude I did it with only the stock jack once and it wasn't that much of a problem. You can only do one at a time, but hey...

Also, I had them resurfaced only 1 time out of 2 on the Prelude and never had a problem. Then again, I was wearing a set of pads every 15k miles too... so results may vary.

BTW: muffler tip is on and looks damn good! Thanks for the info (even if it was way back then)...

Clean the ABS sensors. They probably got some crap on them while you were working on the hub.

if u experience a vibration while applying the brakes at high speed you need your rotors resurfaced. depends if you feel it more thru the steering wheel its pretty likely its the fronts and if you feel it thru the rest of the car or the brake pedaul pulsates slightly (not abs pulsating) then its probably the rears...

personally id recommend replace the pads and resurface the rotors where the pads r low and make sure u top off the fluid when done, if u still have issues get it checked out.

the ABS light its most likely a sensor or some kind of electrical issue. abs light is not for brake fluid thats the BRAKE light.
