Tires, good allseasons?

I wanted to purchase some performance all season tires.

I have a question about sizing too.
On the ralliart stock wheels how much wider tires can I put on?

225/45ZR18 Potenza RE960AS Pole Position
or
235/45ZR18 Yokohama AVID W4S

I was hoping the 235's would be great. 215's are too narrow.

Can the 235's work?
Or 225's the max on the stock tires.

If you want to stay with the stock overall ratio you would go with a 235/40/18, however they stretch a bit on the stock 7" rims, you can fit them though.

Your best bet is to upgrade to some 18x8's and comfortably run the 235 or 45.

I would run the Avid's over the potenza, At work I probably sell 6 Avids to 1 potenza.
They have real good water evacuation and dry traction, Haven't tested them in the snow though.

Another good choice on a budget is the Kumho ASX's

Not sure about tire sizing but I put these on mine and I have no complaints yet. In heavy rain they are good, I haven't had a chance to try them in the snow yet.

All-seasons are no seasons. I would suggest getting a good set of winter tires and a good set of summer tires (with rims).

They are so-called summer tires. They rode pretty good in 25 degree weather. I'm not going to risk it though. I ordered the yokos.

I wish I could afford a set of winter tires and set of summer tires. I just can't justify the winter tires though. We don't get as much snow as Canada. Our roads are also salted up really early too. The only time I really go through snow is when I go north to go snowboarding.

If I start to race this car I'll get some sick wheels and tires, but for now I gotta stay economical until I finish paying this car off in a couple years.

It only take one accident because of sliding around on all season or summer tires to "justify winter tires". Beat the crash to the punch.

Amby's right, that's absolutely the best way to go if you live somewhere with more than a day or two a year of snow. Make sure you also get TPMS's for the extra set of wheels, unless you enjoy swapping hardware wheel-to-wheel twice a year (or maybe going without TPMS's and driving a half-baked car).

If you want the best possible choice of snow tires, then you'll want to get 17x7.5 wheels and go with 215/50R17 or 225/50R17 tires, since 18" snow tires are fewer and farther between (and not as good, on average, due to the smaller selection of brands). Of course, that might also mean getting new summer wheels, so you may want to go with the stock wheels for Winter.

Personally, I went with 17" wheels with 215/50R17's for Winter (nothing special -- just some made-in-China "Sport Edition" wheels, with Michelin X-Ice 2 tires) and will be getting new Summer wheels for 2010 (figure the stock wheels are bearable for a year, but I think that I'm in the minority on finding the stock wheels bearable).

I guess I might just pick up some steelies and the cheapest winter tires i can find (which will still be better than the stocks).....even tho it's only snow like 3 days a year in Connecticut but it's better to be on the safe side i guess.

Why buy steel? -- you can get pretty inexpensive alloys (see below, for a really cheap 17" example from Tire Rack) -- then again, why buy steel, regardless of cost... they make nice cars look like crap.

[note that while I mentioned "Sport Edition" wheels on my car, I did not go quite as cheap as the above]
