Zchip DIY?!
Hey guys I finally got my zchip yesterday night. I tried connecting it and once I got to the "tach wire" part, I almost wanted to shoot myself! ok the pics in the zchip site are of a evo so that metal piece in the uicp was throwing me off. BAck to the tach wire, to me, it looks like teal with a red strip...is that the right wire?? i dont seem to find another wire close to those colors.. white with red stripe.I saw a red with white stripe?! i tried digging in the harness more and nothing. can someone help me out here. another thing is once its all connected, where do i place the zchip itself? it didnt come with double sided tape or screws or picture telling me "place me here---->". Getting to that part of the harness is a mission. wished they had a detailed instructions. Do I have to splice the wire or just place wire in the 3m connector thing and squeeze?H-E-L-P
Do you have the solid UICP? My pipes look exactly like the ones in the pics (http://www.zchip.net/showthread.php?t=20).
OK, locate the ECU. The wire is WHITE with a RED STRIPE (not the other way around). Be warned, there is a wire in a harness that is red with a white stripe. There will be far more white visible than red. If it's dark, get a good light so you can see if you are looking at a white wire with red stripe. Honestly, a good fluorescent light does wonders when looking at colours. This wire is in the wiring harness for the top ecu connector. You can follow the harness down to an inconspicuous location below the UICP and tap in there. You'll need to obviously bring that wire outside the harness to tap into it. It should be fairly simple to locate.
As for locating the ZChip, the best thing I found to do is to run the two wires that go from the MAP sensor you just connected into along the stock wiring harness that goes along the right of the engine. From there, there is enough length to mount the ZChip near the ECU. You can stick it on somewhere, but make sure the tape doesn't melt. You could also zip-tie it on or find somewhere to screw it.
Did you get a special connector on the end of your ZChip tach wire that allows you to kind of screw into the ECU wire? If not, use the 3m connector or solder in. Verify you have the right connection by idling the car and looking for 900-1200rpm in the software.
Good luck.

no i dont have a solid uicp. yes i got a "screw type" connector. how does that work? you have pics? Thanks for all your help. where do i get the software..but the problem i see with the software is i have a mac, does it run on a mac too?
Didn't you get a photo guide for the screw connector? It's really simple. Unscrew the end... don't drop it in the engine bay! Notice there's a small point inside the end connected to the wire. Simply screw the two sides together with the white/red stripe wire between, and you're done.
Z-Chip software is available here:
http://www.zeitronix.com/zdl/z_chip_software.htm
I have a Mac too - if it's a recent Intel Mac (i.e. MacBook or MacBook Pro), you can run Boot Camp, or use Parallels - both let you run Windows.
The Cobb AP/Z-Chip fight is being done in another thread, btw...

ok I finally got it connected, I found the white wire with red stripe! for all you people who are thinking about doing the zchip yourself, its way in the bottom of the wire bundle towards the engine side, NOT the battery side. It took really maybe 15 min after i found the wire to do all the hook up and its running great! thanks scott and shane for your help also ksattic.

yep not too bad.. the first take off it shifted fast in sport mode. didnt redline at all..than i did it on manual and there is a difference for sure. I have a question. does the zchip take away the top speed limiter?
Have you downloaded their software, done any data logging or attempted any tweaks yourself? I called TTP and they said that the end user can make tuning tweaks. Im just trying to find someone who has attempted it themselves.
If you were to remove it, would there be any trace of it being installed in your opinion?
Keep reporting back, we are all very curious.

ok the tune you got with the "torque protection" kick in was not recomended by them. they said it would affect the daily driving of it and not a good idea. got the most i can get. no CELs yet. just came back from driving and it runs really sweet! it can be removed without a problem and the new connection device for the tach wire allows you to connect without cutting or slicing..maybe a little black tape and remember the wire itself is deep in the bottom of the bundle so unless they KNOW what wire to look for, no one should be able to see it. I think this is really the best choice for me, got the HP i wanted and without any down time. No need to send ECU away to get it reflashed back to stock if there was a problem. I havent DL the software yet, like i said i have a mac and i need to get windows to run this program. Once i do ill let you guys know.
On TTP's forum there is a request for trainging thread. Have you heard anything about that? I was hoping to get some guidance.

1. What did you have the ZChip loaded/ programed with? Same as IDriveRA?
2. How much did you pay?
3. Link for quick connector?
Thanks

elpoole i DL the software, maybe ill mess around with it tomorrow night. Now for the answers for the questions.
1. I got the same map that IDriveRA has currently, which gave him the power without the CELS. his original tune was aggressive and the one he currently has is slightly less aggressive. Still great power.
2.I paid 399...total 411 with shipping (they had/have a special on the ZChip)
3. quick connector is?...the connection for the computer to tune your zchip?...if thts it than yes. if your talking about the chip itself has a connection for the wire so you dont have to splice it?
