keeping can of fix a flat vs. spare tire

Is it plausible to just keep a can of fix a flat in my trunk vs. the spare tire to save on weight? will it junk up the tpms?

Put it this way, if you get a flat and put fix a flat in the tire, whats gonna pump the tire back up?

The Fix a Flat adds enough air to get to a service station and replace the tire. Fix a Flat ruins tires by the way, don't keep adding cans.

Keep the spare.

Yeah. If you put fix-a-flat in a tire, it's done.

Unless you are racing your car I do not think the weight savings of no spare tire is really worth it, and if you do go to the track you can just take it out temporarily.

Otherwise just do not have a spare and hope you are in cell range to call someone if your tire goes flat. =)

16" doughnut rapes limited slip diff + the stock tires = worthless so destroying them with fix a flat is probably the best thing you could do to them

The 16" doughnut has a tire that has the same circumference as the stock tires so the revolutions per mile will stay the same.

If the spare affected the LSD that badly, Mitsubishi would not have included it with the car. Just follow the instructions and don't drive the the spare for extended periods of time.

Also, when I had a flat, the entire sidewall blew out. Fix a Flat wouldn't have helped.

fix a flat doesn't necessarily ruin tires. My dad worked in a tire repair shop for 10+ years....while he told me it sucks ****, it's not a death sentence for every tire.

That said -- i wouldn't depend on it. Man up, keep the spare. I've had 2 massive blowouts on the interstate that fix-a-flat wouldn't even touch.

Is fix a flat available for an 18" tire? I've looked in stores just out of curiosity ans waiting for the fiancee and only found cans that say up to 16" tire. I've also heard that they make an absolute mess out of the inside of the tire when used and a PITA to clean out when the tire gets repaired.

I'd probably only ever use that crap if my spare tire was also flat...

I carry an $8 plug kit which you can get from any auto parts store and a small air pump which is equally cheap. I have a Corvette and it comes with a kit of slime and a pump. The idea is the same. Instead of slime I bought a plug kit. Plug the hole and refill the air. You can find pumps cheap. Never worry about flats and you don't have to carry a spare.

is slime generally better than fix a flat? i was browsing online and there's sealant stuff you can buy that's designed for fixing bullet holes in large hummer tires.

i looked at those plug kits, but the idea of fixing a hole at night with one of these kits seems a little far fetched.

As far as I know, all that stuff is the same except for the brand name on it. It's not intended to be any sort of permanent or semi-permanent fix...only supposed to get you down the road to the garage.

I used it a couple years ago to make it home late at night, and the wheel was sitting back on the rim again in the morning. This stuff will work in an emergency, but you'll cause yourself less headaches if you just keep your donut in the trunk.
