Turbo Cooldown

Okay, so I know that in order to get the most service life out of the turbo we need to idle our motors to allow the turbo to cooldown.

How long is it recommended to idle our motors in order to let the turbo cooldown to avoid longterm damage?

Nevermind I used the Search function and found out what is recommended. Search is our friend.

when you letting the car idle, (which what a turbo timer does it best so you dont have to sit there) you letting the oil dain out of the turbo so no oil sits inside the turbo and creates residue that its not good for the turbo. So cooling the turbo has nothing to do with anything cause it will never cool down until the car is off. Get a turbo timer and the minimum time is 30sec to let it idle.

You really don't need to worry about turbo cooldown unless you've been boosting full-throttle right up to your front door. A minute or two of normal driving before shutting down is all you need.

It should be noted that turbos using ONLY oil to cool the turbo require the cool down stage. Since the Ralliart uses water and oil, there is no need to worry.

welcome to the rest of the evos that use OIL AND WATER on their turbos. evo8 and 9 16g are oil and water cooled also. Everyone that has turbo cars uses turbo times due to the fact as i mentioned before that no matter if its oil and h2o or just oiled cooled the turbo timer help for the oil to completely dain of the turbo so no residue builds inside the housing so water has nothing to do with the turbo cooling in this theory, it only helps cooling the temp when the turbo is working at idle, while the car is partial throttle or wot, it will not help with draining your oil from the turbo to oil pan ONLY letting the car idle for a bit helps with that, and thats where the turbo timer comes in handy so the car is still running while you can just walk away.

I usually idle my car for about 30 seconds, or until oil temps get down to 190 degrees or below. Do you guys think 190 is overkill? If so, what would you recommend as a safe temp to shut her down, assuming I've let it idle for at least a minute or so when it's at those higher temps?

By using the full synthetic Mobil-1 that Mitsubishi uses, you will never need to worry about this 'residue'. Let's get rid of this old school thinking on these new school cars and products.

I should mention that if you are racing your car, I personally would let it do a cool down.

If you're a daily driver then don't worry about the cool down.
