octane boost? Yes/no?

Ok so I live in Canada and cannot get 94 octane...the best we have from what I can find is 91....Ive been debating the idea of putting NOS racing octane boost to make up the difference? anyone know something about this should I run my RA 09 with it or what? any other tips would help thanks!

hey mate, i've tried Nulon Pro Strength octane boost and i'll definately say that it got rid of 2-5 counts of random knock and i was able to add about 3* up top now with the occasional 1 knock.

did a before/after log and charted it just to see any difference, its ruff example but hope this helps you!

No, for the most part those off the shelf octane boosters make an almost insignificant change unless you use a lot of them. What part of Canada do you live in? Husky has 94 octane at most if not all its stations now.

i'd probably agree with you that most dont work, there are a few reviews out there with lab testing being conducted showing actual MON increases opposed to the advertised claims. personally i think they are expensive way to gain a little bit of power, better to mod and tune to whatever fuel is available. having said that, i was surprised at how well the Nulon worked!

huskymohawk in Canada carries 94 octane. Its funny though, province to province the major gas outlets change. Out east is Irving and ultramar, we dont even have those here.

If you feel that you must have higher octane fuel and do not have access to 94 or e85, you can purchase Toluene at most paint or hardware stores. It is available in 1 gallon cans or larger drums. Don't get it on your paint.

Mixing the stuff for a specified octane level isn't difficult, as determining the proportion of gasoline to Toluene is basic math, which involves mean/average:

Toluene (R+M/2) Octane: 114

Average Octane = (Base x Qty1 + Change x Qty2) / (Qty1 + Qty 2)

Example for a 12 gallon tank:

To 10 gallons of 91 octane, you add 2 gallons of Toluene. The math would be:

((91 x 10) + (114 x 2)) / (10 + 2)

Simplified:

91 + 91 + 91 + 91 + 91 + 91 + 91 + 91 + 91 + 91 + 114 + 114 / 12 (the total number of gallons in mixture)
= 94.8 octane.

Only thing bad about Toluene is repeated use can cause wear and tear because its not a naturally lubercated product like gasoline

I used some off the shelf octane boosters in the past, but the ones I tried left deposits in the combustion chamber. I had crap all over my spark plugs... sort of a reddish brownish crap.

I've read that off the shelf octane boosters only raise octane points. Not whole numbers, I've read they mean like a tenth of a point...

So if you spend $6 on octane booster to go from 91 octane to 91.1 octane, you might as well try shoving that money into the gas tank, it'd work better...

And isn't toluene horrificly bad for most fuel lines and other associated components? My buddy who used to have a supra cooked his own 100octane using toluene because he didn't care (it was a 450+ hp mk3 that he owned just to bag on)

Oh, and you BC guys get better gas than us.

Here in AB:

87 = regular
89 = plus
91 = premium

94 at Husky/Mohawk (which is 10% ethanol) is at 5c or so more per liter than premium...it's been a while since i used 94 on any of my cars (mainly because I hate mohawk and husky and at my altitude, 91 is basically same-same)
