Engine load while AC is running?

After driving a R/A for a few weeks, I noticed that the engine fans and the engine seem to be under a lot of load while the A/C is turned on under 75.

Seems the A/C unit is drawing too much heat, after a few drives in hot weather and shutting the A/C off, the fans kicked on for a few minutes after it was it was turned off everytime.

I don't have it anymore and back into my car, which has no issues, I wonder if either the GSR or MR have the same issues, and if its caused by too much heat combined with engine/turbo heat and the A/C unit?

Uhm, air conditionings draw HP and energy from the engine in any car at any temperture and speed of any car.

Edit: I think thats all normal, ive driven around a r/a too and live in florida and no way there is too much heat, are you SURE it was the fans kicking in after about more than 5 seconds of turning the ac off?

I drove the car from home to work in the afternoons, I put down the windows most days, but the days I did have it on (while listening to the news) when I got home the fans would kick on after I shut it off completely.

Granted, its not my car and doesn't have a turbo-timer, though I don't believe its warranted on a completely stock car and after reading the owner's manual doesn't ask for the car to be left on after driving.

I do too think that the car generates too much heat, and I wonder if there is adequate cooling even with the vents. Also, if the '08 Evo has the same issue, I am considering a MR(more for the wife as she will be driving it in auto) and actually having two Evos in the drive-way (which would be awesome)?

a turbo timer has nothing to do with what an engine needs, its a turbo timer for a reason. On our particular application it is not needed thanks to a water & oil cooled turbo.

If the fans don't come on until AFTER you turn the car off, then the car isn't "generating too much heat." If the coolant light came on, or the coolant guage was very close to the high side then you could say the car "generates too much heat."

Cooling fans that come on after you turn off the ignition generally do so because coolant is no longer flowing through engine, and are designed to prevent/limit heat soak that could otherwise damage the engine. This is completely normal behavior.

AC compressors cause a considerable load to an engine. This is why your fuel consumption increases when they are on. Extra load equals extra heat. If you turn the AC off a few blocks from home, my guess is the fans won't kick on.

If i remember correctly, one of the criteria for turning the fans on is the intake air temp. So if it's a hot day and you stop the car for too long, there's little air flow and it starts ingesting some of it's own hot air, it'll trip a flag so that when its turned off, it'll keep the fans on for 2 minutes. And the 2 minutes is no matter what, it doesn't change.

Another issue is at stop lights as well, seems to kick on even then. I understand why it does this-but even in my IX or SUV, both are quieter and the fan doesn't kick on as much.

Its like a fat kid who just ran 5 miles, it seems its under a lot of stress even after normal driving.

Not happy with the Ralliart I assume? I will give Mistsubishi credit when releasing the Ralliart, especially with the TC-SST. In a few years I think it will be an outstanding platform if it doesn't get the ax for a standard automatic (CVT-ewwww) or a 5spd.

Given the current contender, it doesn't fare well-and with the '11 WRX sharing the widebody of an STI, makes it ever more attractive. When the Ralliart starts sharing (or stealing) more parts from a Evo, I think we will have a winner.

had the same problem for atleast 3 times here.
Here's how it happens, drove for the whole day and turn it off after few seconds on park infront of my house. Turn it off and get out from the car and heard this fan noise, I notice that I always left the fan on auto whether the car is on or off.

Solution:
When A/C fan is still on after you turn off you car, get back in the car start it up, turn the A/C to off > auto > off (while the engine is one) make sure you end up with off before shutting the engine off again =)

GOOD LUCK! hope this helps!

sadly its more then likely the engine rad fans that are still on cooling the coolant afterwards as an added measure.

LEts complain about the tires requiring 30+ psi of air next boys. I dont think that has been brought up yet.

I don't see what the big deal is about the fan staying on for an extra 5 minutes after you turn the car off. I was concerned the first time it happened because I have a mini-battery but even with that small battery I didn't have any issues starting again.

For the 2008+ Evo, the 2009+ Ralliart, and 2008+ Lancers, the fans will kick on even after the engine is turned off. This is normal. They covered it in the tech 4B11 videos, which there is also a thread for.

It depends on three variables whether the fans kick on or not, and I believe it's something like this: the ambient temp. when the car is turned off, the temp. of the engine, and whether or not the A/C was left in the ON position. If all these three factors come into play, then the fans will kick on for a few minutes AFTER the car is turned off. Nothing to worry about, and it's completely normal even if the engine isn't in heavy load.

Test drive a VW GTI, turn the AC on and try to go to a drive thru....the fans are so loud they drown out both parties. The fans on the RA are silent by comparison!
