Putting car in park, have to hold the collar on the shifter
Hoping there is a simple fix, since the dealership I bought the car from are not helpful, POS', rather not take it in.
Obv have to pull up the collar around the shifter to get out of park. If I put the car in park by just pushing the shifter up, I am unable to lock the ignition (FAST/Keyless) and it's a bit difficult getting it out of park if I do that by accident.
If I hold the collar up while putting into park there is no issue.
Any suggestions on a fix? The collar just isn't popping back up into place.
I had to get my tires balanced and told the person they had to hold that while putting into park, of course that went ignored.

I'm pretty sure it's not going all the way into actual Park when you don't lift the collar. I'm like 99% sure there are 2 physical stops between drive and park that would prevent you from being able to do that. 1 physical stop between Neutral and Reverse, and a physical stop between reverse and Park. This is to prevent you from accidentally knocking the car into reverse and destroying the transmission. Like wise with getting it into park.
So, if you're just pushing it forward from drive to try to get it into park, it should be stoping at Neutral... or reverse... if it's not you've got a problem. It's possible the shift lever sensor could be slightly mis-aligned but it shouldn't be saying P when you're in N... but its possible that it's says P when you're really in R if you've been shoving the selector forward hard and long enough...

Thanks for the reply. It does go into P when I push it straight up from drive with little force. But if I don't lift the collar, the collar gets stuck a bit and I have to pull it up and wiggle it down to R. Sounds like I'll take to the other dealer and see what they say. Minor annoyance, but better safe than it being or turning into a bigger issue.

Yeah, not happy with this dealership. Turns out I don't need to hold the collar to shift from P to R. Besides getting this fixed, guess it's my mission to make sure I let as many people know about this @$@$ dealership as possible and calling Mitsubishi directly as well.
Pulled up the console to have a look. Found the issue. There is a lever behind the shifter that the collar locks into. The collar is too low to lock, so that's why I end up having to hold the collar to put it into park. Guess I'm taking it in. First pic you can see the lever, second pic I'm lifting the collar and you can see the "latch" on the back.
Actually looking at the second pic, under the collar on the console it looks like there might be a piece of plastic that is broken off that would normally lift the collar and probably lock it from sliding back without lifting....

^to me that would be a feature not a problem.
But then again, handling when to be in gear or not does not happen accidentally for me nor do i let children in/near my car without strict supervision (and NO ice cream! At all. None. Finsh it before you get in! - And don't give me that look! I'll... )

this post has me a little confused is the op trying to go from drive to park with out lifting the collar? thats bad only time it should be able to move without lifting the collar is from drive to neutral and back.or to manual mode of course
I'm not trying to put it into gear from P without lifting the collar, but I can. The original issue was not being able to lock the starter when putting the car in park. Which I found I needed to lift the collar when putting the car into park. That's what led to me pulling up the console and finding the issue. Wish there was an answer on how I could fix myself.
Anyone else have a pic of their shifter with the console removed for comparison?

You are NOT supposed to be able to put the car INTO or OUT OF park without lifting the collar. The fact that you have been forcing the shifter forward into park without lifting the collar means that you are causing damage to your shifter mechanism. You will likely need an entire shifter assembly to properly remedy the problem.
That lever that locks out the shifter and forces you to lift the collar is doing its job by stopping you. The problem is not that it is keeping you from taking the key out, the problem is that you are trying to override a safety feature that you are unaware of.

Not as though I was intentionally forcing it into P without holding the collar. The dealer was the one who put the car in park originally and there was an issue with fully shutting down the car, but that happened once. Obviously looking at that diagram it shows the collar doesn't has to be lifted when going from D to N, but N to R or P the collar needs to be held.
AGAIN I wasn't attempting to force it into P, I have been lifting the collar, and I don't force it from P to R without holding the collar.
I was simply saying that it can be put into P without holding the collar, which in turn doesn't allow the car to fully turn off or lock the starter (I have the FAST key).
I've had the car 2 weeks and only put it into P without the collar a couple of times initially. Obviously the previous owner causes some damage. Going to the dealer on Monday, which more than likely will need to replace the assembly.
So to verify, MUST pull collar up to take out of AND put into park?
Also when I got my tires balanced I told the tech to hold the collar, which they didn't. How do you guys deal with this? Prob a non issue for you, since it SHOULDN'T go into P without the collar held normally....
