Question Went to the track last night...

2011 Ralliart with the GST base map (stock ra + boost bill) (I think 2.9 version) , boost pill and K&N filter. Took this out to the local 1/4 mile track, Pittsburgh Raceway, and got 3 runs in for the evening. 1st and 2nd run I had the car setup as ASC off, Tarmac, and sport mode, 30 psi in tires. 3rd run, same but with gravel mode. It was about 75 degrees out. 1st run, I did the blip the throttle 3 times to about 2500 rpm, then brake boost as soon as the lights start dropping and go, car launched hard then completely fell on its face and said it overheated and I came to a stop. It was embarrassing as hell. Needless to say I had like a 32 second run...2nd run I didnt launch, just hit the gas when the 2nd to last yellow went. got a 2.6185 60 foot, 14.3723 @ 99.71 mph. 3rd run, I brake boosted very slightly just to give the car a little bit of a launch and got a 2.6675 60 foot and 14.5248 @ 99.23 mph.
I know this car has 13's in it as it sits given I could actually launch it the way I would like to, it makes me really mad that the advantage of AWD at the track I cant use because the car refuses to launch. Is there any way that that limp mode can be stopped when launching?

I don't get limp mode if I go back on the track when the SST temp reads 70C on evoscan. A fan on the OEM trans cooler or a upgraded trans cooler with a fan is going to help. For me when I do track and don't use the fan the SST will maintain it's temp. I usually open my hood, my fan is already on and I would check ecuflash before I track again.

The thing is, I dont see how the transmission could have been over heated for real, I think the pcm just is set to say that message. The hood was open for over an hour before the run so it should have been cool.

They do though. I have watched my SST trans and you will see 2 things.
1. The transmission is hard for it to cool off. It pretty much maintains it's temp. This is why the fan is great to have. It really does help.

2. The SST does heat up quickly at a track. It won't heat up to aggressively driving but it takes that much more of a beating at the track.

Next time you take it to the track log the SST trans temp. You will see this happening. When the trans temp is 74C and I try to do a 1/4 mile I will get the message.

This is what I seen from my experience. I feel the same way you do.

Wow, thats insane that Mitsu would design the car like that especially the kind of car its meant to be with seeing spirited driving at the very least...so yeah I guess maybe a fan and upgraded cooler and some cryo2 will be needed lol

Lol... Spirited driving I never had an issue. Just the track :-( a lot of people just add a fan to the OEM cooler. There
Is a write up on it here.

I think this is where you went wrong

1st run, I did the blip the throttle 3 times to about 2500 rpm, then brake boost as soon as the lights start dropping and go, car launched hard then completely fell on its face and said it overheated and I came to a stop.
iirc you do one or the other but not both.

in my experience brake boosting does not treat the SST well. It responds w the cool down to prevent damage. It is a hit or miss that way. Takes some practice. You could have done it at cold start and if done incorrectly can still throw that message. The temperature that the car registers for the trans fluid is not exact, its guesstimated, pretty much simulated.

I prefer the tap the gas method. lightly till it gets up to about 2k rpm and floor it. not sure if it registers as movement at the track.

Just to state the obvious - Ralliarts are not made for drag racing and even with major tuning are just OK at it. I don't know why you're trying so hard to break your transmission with this kind of hard launching. But if you insist, put a cooler on it and flash it to get S-Sport mode. Or go to a track with actual corners, where the AWD can show what it's capable of in something other than a straight line.

My guess is that this is what happened to you on your first run, watch the front end fall and the car slow down around 25 seconds:

That means you held the brake torque just a little too long. Either tap until the second yellow and then start the brake torque, or try adding a fan/upgrade your cooler to keep the temps lower when launching.

The RA is a great car for drag racing, imo. Definitely not the fastest, but very quick and incredibly consistent. If it wasn't for the cheating-*** sandbaggers that go out and bracket race by me, it'd be a great contender.

I'm sure it can be made adequate for drag racing with some significant mods, but it's still an entry-level vehicle and Mitsubishi did not design it with that purpose in mind. If they did, it would have S-Sport enabled out of the factory.

mitsubishi didn't design any car for drag racing, the same with honda, nissan, toyota, mazda but those makes are used for drag racing, the parts the ralliart come with from the from the factory make it a very good 1/8 car. with the stock turbo the car is hard to beat in a bracket class, when you figure out to launch the car consistently, I spent 3 weeks every wed, fri,sat at the track learning how to launch the car, going from a 60ft of 2.2 to 1.9 then to 1.7,once i got the launch right i was able to win events,

I wish I could practice more at the track, it sucks that in a whole night of racing I can only get 3 runs if im lucky...
