luckily I hear that (at least here in canada) prices of service parts/fluids recently went down. That being said, you'll probably want to check ebay or other places online for the SST filter to change at the same time you change your fluid. (I got my oem one on ebay for $70). SSP also had a pretty decent price (around 30-ish for the oem), but I didn't check how much shipping would be to canada
You'll know a gear slips when you give it gas and it doesn't go. The engine just revs and the car doesn't move. Holding the gas down for a second or two will allow the clutch to grab and the car will move again. I had occasional slippage on first gear in Normal mode after coming off a stop. It happens very rarely so it's hard to reproduce. I've been told that changing the SST fluids regularly will solve this issue.

I heard that the price of ACD pump replacements went way down (since the part simply cannot handle Canadian winters and Mitsu finally budged on the price), but transmission service is still expensive as hell at Mitsubishi dealerships. $700 for the SST fluid and filter alone. $1200 for the whole 50K km service.
For my full Tranny fluid change I paid $360 including OEM filter (which I got on ebay for about $70)
Changing the fluids is a huge deal for the SST whether you've owned since it was driven off the lot or bought it used. Unless you are generating more than 300 hp/ tq (IE: Evo X Turbo Swap, and all supporting mods) then you shouldn't be worrying to much. As another member stated, if you put it in a gear (I would suggest either 4th because it is closest to a 1:1 ratio) and drop to a low RPM (Like 2k) and floor it, it should rev, catch, then the revs raise with the speed. If the revs jump however when you are your peak torque (Check relevant dyno graphs based on your set-up to figure out where yours may be) then it may be "slipping" {[Slipping could result from overheating, fluid/filter, not warm enough]}
I felt true slippage when I was at 340/340, since I didn't want to damage the transmission, I tuned it down and that's when I did my manual swap...
