Flutter sound w/ throttle off.. BOV issues?
Flutter sound w/ throttle off.. BOV issues?
Hey guys, good morning.
I've been reading through this forum for a while now, and really appreciate the information and expertise we can find here. Congrats to you all.
I have a 11/12 Ralliart Sportback running with a Grimmspeed 3 port EBCS, Turbosmart Dual Port BOV (full recirculating configuration), Injen intake, and a engine and transmission tune on the maps. Some other stuff also but I dont think it makes a difference here.
As from this weekend, I started noticing a flutter sound when releasing the throttle. Before that, I used to notice a low "psiii" sound when releasing the gas pedal when I was at high RPM/boost. Whenever I released the pedal with low RPM and low boost, I would listen to a flutter sound that my tuner told me it is normal, because there wasn't boost enough to open the bov and it wouldn't damage the turbo therefore.
However, I now listen the flutter sound whether I have low or high boost. I opened the BOV to check if it was stuck shut. It was dark from dust, but no noticeable dirt to make it stuck, and although it was a little hard, it didn't seem stuck. I cleaned it nevertheless with a cloth and it got shiny. Put the piston back on its chamber and it was moving free. After lubing it with a machinery oil, as Turbosmart suggests on their video, it was actually less free than without any lubrication. I took the oil out by cleaning it again and applied a little less. Same result. As I thought cleaning it would be enough, I installed like that. Nothing changed. I'm going to try and clean it and put no lube at all, just to see if changes something.
Since my tuner on whom I rely is travelling, I took the car to a shop close to home and the guy said that sound is normal, which I don't think so. Anyway, he checked for leaks and couldn't find any.
Ow, also I tried to soft the spring as much as possible (acoording to Turbosmart's manual, we can't rotate it counterclock wise above the first indicator o'ring), without noticeable changes.
I repeat that the flutter sound does not happen when I have a open throttle, so I don't believe it's a compressor or tune wrongly dimmensioned.
The sound is pretty much as the one in the video below (I lack a good camera for making any videos now, so forgive me for using other person's video). The only difference is that the guy gets the flutter whenever he changes gear for running a MT, whereas I drive a SST.
I'm going to my tuner next wednesday, so we can install bbk, Mishimoto's intercooler and check the BOV (and a retune). However, since his shop is at 300 miles away, I'd like to solve this problem before going there, if possible.
Any help is greatly appreciated and sorry for the long post and any grammar mistakes.
Thanks in advance!

I'm evo x swapped, and also have the Cobb 3 port. Mine flutters 1-8psi with low throttle. In my situation you need 8psi i believe to open up the wastegate fully. Hitting below to me seems like it only partly opens it and it flutters. I was also told by my tuner this is normal.

Unfortunately, since last weekend I started noticing the flutter sound even at high boost, the kind of situation I used to listen a low "psiii" sound of the bov opening
Hey guys, just an update as it might be a problem for someone in the future:
The problem was the "T" installed for the manometer.. It was plastic and had some manufacture problem, as it was plugged in the inside, deformed... We switched it for a metal one and it works perfectly now!
Thanks, Josh for the help!

Off topic: Do you like your bov?
Hey Josh!
Well, this is my first turboed ride, so I'm not familiar with a lot of bovs...
However, it works great. Holds the pressure as it should and, even though it scared me with the issue above, it was not the bov's fault. Also, I think it looks pretty good and you have the options to full recirculate, full vent to atmosphere and 50/50 recirculation/venting, which is also nice, as you might wanna change every now and then. To do it is quite easy.
Also, I've heard lots of good stuff about Turbosmart's costumer service.
Well, I don't see me getting a new BOV ever! lol

The "T" is needed only if you add a Boost Gauge.
Try swapping in the old BOV (if you can) and see if that fixes it.
If not - I am in MD (Calvert CO) and would let you swap in my IX BOV to troubleshoot.

You can try and soften the spring, if there is one available (I dont know this BOV). But switch back to the other, as the other buddy uphere suggeted and test it again.
OK thanks!! I live in Severn. I'll be off this whole week so if you have time, maybe and can swing by and have you hear it. I've had two other guys say it sounds fine, but I didn't get this sound from the stock 8 bov

Yeah, to me that sounds as compressor surge, and as nice the sound may be, it's not good for your compressor. I couldn't notice though, you hear the sound while having any throttle or when you release the throttle? In any case, which rpm did you have when hearing the noise?
Ha-ha I meant to say "Maybe I can swing by". I was typing on my phone and trying to mess with my car. Didn't even proof read it. Relax
