winter slicks
Just installed a set of 205/60R-16 Continental ExtremeWinterContact XL's on 16" steelies. Got them brand new from Tire Rack for a little over $600 (wheels included). Definitelly would recommend. Haven not driven it much, but took it around the block a few times and they are amazing. What a difference from the summer tires. Will post picks soon, though they are ugly as sin. Lot of rubber.
60/16's OMG! Holy sidewall batman.
You and this guy.

17" snow tires are pretty cheap I don't know why anyone would go 16". I guess for the cheap wheels?
I'm just not willing to make my car look that bad for half the year. It looks like some American sedan with all that rubber.

yeah 16's are silly.
Plus i think its stupid that people take the stock rims off to "protect them" . They are STOCK.
i have 215 45 18 michelin x ice tires on my car. Only like 80$ more, but i can drift and play with confidence, and i dont have to worry about the side wall exploding under more pressure from sharp corners and such.

I went with the 16's because they don't make larger steelies than that and going to different rims and larger tire size would've costed me about $300 more and I was not willing to just buy tires so I can keep paying someone to keep switching them for me each season. IT IS FOR THE WINTER. THAT IS WHY THEY ARE CALLED WINTER TIRES. I AM NOT ENTERING THIS THING IN HOT IMPORT NIGHTS.

Press pause on your DVD player and take a break for watching Fast and the Furious for a while. Good point though, next time I need tires, the first thing I should look out for is whether or not I can drift with them in the snow. I guess I'll have to drop down to about 60 mph's the next time I take a corner. By the way, you just paid about $60 more a tire ($240) just so you can drift. Good job.

i think you mis understood the drift comment. Its something fun to do late at night in an empty parking lot. i.e. the one at my family business, that is private and fenced in. But thanks for the lecture dad.
and the 240$ isnt just for drifting, its for everyday performance handling wise.. This may come as a suprise, but in jan feb up here it can get really dry for long periods of time, and as the weather gets dry as do the roads. Please dont speak of things you dont know.
thanks.

Don't get all hurt. I just don't like the look. Sorry. I'm sure it handles great in the slick stuff. It just doesn't look good doing it.
I'm sure you can drift it as fast as you want. WTF I've been drifing old muscle cars in the snow since the early 90's and I don't think any of them had a sidewall under 60. Not 1 bead popped ever.
I paid about $950 for 4 225/45/17 hankook ipikes on 17x8" 7 spoke aluminum from discount tire. To me it was so worth the extra $350. I went with pretty much the cheapest aluminum wheels I could find for the evo. Even so I'm impressed with how good they look. I think I like the way they look on the car better than my 5zigens I have for summer.
My old beater had steel wheels. We get massive amounts of precip where I live. 200 inches a year and I live on the beach. The steel wheels will get surface rust on the back from the brake disks and stick to the hubs like glue. I've had to use a crow bar to get the wheel off so I could change a flat several times. Actually once on my neighbors car I had to use a 10' 2x4 like a battering ram from the opposite side of the car to pound the wheel off. It didn't budge till I beat the crap out of it for 15 minutes or so too. It's kinda funny when there's no lug nuts on the wheel but it just will not come off for anything. For an extra $350 I never have to deal with that. My wheels will never rust.
Every time someone gives you crap for that 16" wheel and those tall sidewalls remember that $300 you saved. Was it worth it? =)

you guys realize that small sidewalls (ex. our stock rims with 45 series winters) are not nearly as good in the winter elements as a tire with a larger sidewall (ex. a 60 series on a 16") just like a wider tire doesn't mean more grip on ice.
BTW I have 16" steels also and couldn't justify the extra $300 or so as I have a wedding upcoming in a few months and paying the bills as the fiancee goes to university. My 16" winters with steels were cheaper then just 18" winter tires and I don't have to take them on and off the rim twice a year.
OP I have the Continental ExtremeWinterContact as well and they are by far the best winter tire I've owned. I had Blizzaks on my Civic and the Conti perform just as well if not better for less then half the price.

Holy crap I've become the poster boy for the 16" winter tire set
At any rate my 16" winter tires have performed flawlessly FTW.
For those that dislike them thats your opinion. However I like to think that I am a man wearing sensible winter footwear opposed to the young bucks who forego warmth for fashion or peer pressure, much like a women.
And to JohnDoe1984 I have two things to say...
1.The photo of your rim and tire that you constantly post aint that that good
it looks like you drove through some meadow muffins
2. If you are going to use my car to make your point I would like if you used this photo instead

Cheers all

Hehe.
I've been meaning to get some better pics but my car is absolutely filthy from the roads and it's too cold to wash it. There's still quite a few dirt roads up here in Alaska. It looks like I drove through some meadow muffins probably because I did. =P
I tell you what we'll post pics of our winter setups and the rest of the forum can say which looks better. You're obviously biased for the 16" chrome. Yeah I know my front lip is beat up from the feet up.

JohnDoe1984....those are some good points that I didn't think of. The rust could be a problem, but thankfully I don't drive it that much so it should last me a few years. I do agree that the 16" steelies with all that sidewall is not the pretiest look. I look like a Chicago cab driver with missing wheel covers.
On another note, not sure if there is a post on this already, but yesterday as I was driving the car with the new wheels (about 40 miles on them) a Service Required light came on. Is that because of the TPMS? I decided not to get the sensors in the new rims.

JohnDoe1984 this is not a Fanboy vote. I will concede that your EVO looks better with your rim and tire set up.
I am constantly helping push a G35 with 18” Blizzacks out from Sweet **** All in the snow dept.
They are too wide. I will argue that under severe winter conditions my set up will out perform yours as they are pizza cutters and work as such.
I will also state that your photographic skills are FAIL

You live in one of the most beautiful areas of the world and you raise the bar by posting ”drive way shots”
I took these today with my BlackBerry… Don’t make me break out the Canon

Anyhow nice EVO dude, and is that your Ford in the background?
Cheers

Do not worry about it. If the display and tire pressure warning light bother you then spend the money and get the TPMS sensors installed on your steelies.
I can only see the price falling for this in the future as it seems to be a moneygrab by the dealers at this point
Cheers
