coilover advice
coilover advice
so i placed my order for some bc br coils and opted to go with the stock 8k front and 6k rear spring rates for my ralliart sport back. I'll basically be using the car simply just for daily spirited driving with no plans to track or anything like that so i figured the stock spring rates should suffice.
now my question is with that being said how should i set the damper settings? I'm thinking the middle for both front and rear should be good for the application I'm using it for. is that wise? i have to get this right the first time since i have no plans on drilling any holes to be able to adjust the rears so i want to avoid having to remove the rears to adjust the damper settings again.
any other thoughts? what are your damper settings? i won't be standing the car either, I'm just trying to eliminate the massive wheel gap.

I prefer stiffness so I have 8k 10k and dampening on max stiff front and back, it all depends how u like ur ride quality I suggest u set maybe 5 clicks from stiff on both and if u don't like it make 1 last adjustment, it's doubtful that where u set it initially you will end up keeping it

Since you're on the 6k springs, you will want to "pre-load" the springs after you get the coilovers because they do not preload them at the factory. With a 6k spring, you'll want to pre-load 1.25 - 1.5 inches (compress the spring with the collars). If you don't do that, the weight of the car will compress the spring so much that you'll basically be riding bump stops at the rear and have a worse ride than you would with lowering springs. For the damper setting with that spring, I would go with 5 - 8 clicks from full soft.
On the fronts, I run 5 clicks from full soft, and 0.5" of pre-load on the 8k springs that came with the BC Racing BR coilovers.
The pre-loading the springs centers the shock travel so the suspension can do what it's supposed to. Without setting the pre-load you'll end up sitting too low in the shock travel length and bottom out the suspension too easily, compromising ride quality and suspension control.
To pre-load the spring, you'll want to loosen the spring collars, measure the spring, the tighten the spring perch collar until the spring is compressed the desired amount. After you reached the desired pre-load tighten the lock collar to prevent it from loosening. After that, you adjust your height from the bottom adjustments of the coilover.
