Tire Size Opinions

Hi All,

First, I want to say that I have read several threads on fitment, and this is not a question about whether the tires will fit. I am looking for people's opinions on how the tires will look on my car.

I'm trying to decide between 3 different sized tires to mount on my 18 x 8 rims this spring. If it matters, they are ASA GT5 silver, and tires would be Bridgestone Potenza RE-11. Sizes are:

225/45/18
225/40/18
235/40/18

The 225/40 are the cheapest (significantly), but my concern is that they may look too thin/small (-1/2 inch diameter, compared to stock) for the car with stock suspension.

The 225/45 will be a bit thicker on the rims (+1/3 inch diameter) than the stock tires

The 235/40 will be about the same thickness (only -1/5 inch diameter), but will the extra width be an issue in terms of either performance or appearance?

Can anyone chime in on which size will look best, and which will offer the best performance on my rims?

Thanks!

I also have 18x8 wheels, and I went with 235/40-18 Bridgestone Potenza RE970AS. They fit perfectly. There is no stretching nor overhang/bulging. I also liked that they were the closest to stock diameter for the speedometer/odometer.

The wider the tire, the better they should perform in dry conditions, but they won't be quite as good in snow. However, the difference between 225 and 235 probably won't be huge either way.

think the 225 might have more of a stretched look which some people like. 235 to me would look better with 40 that a 45. guess all depends on how much wheel gap u want

Glad to hear that it works well. Do you happen to have a few pics? I'd love to see how it looks on your RA.

Honestly, I'm not looking for the stretched look as much as protection from curbs... I stretched the stock 215's over the 18 x 8 wheels and had some curb rash issues I just didn't know if the 235's would look too wide. Not even considering 235/45, only 235/40's.

Since I'm not lowered, the biggest concern I had was the gap being too big. Since most people on here seem to think that the gap is too big from the factory, I am concerned about the 225/40's looking really tiny...
