turbo cooldown

My friend mentioned to me that after a ride it is important to make a turbo cooldown. He essentially said that i should let the car idle for a minute or two to leave time for the oil to get into the turbo and let it cool down. Or something along these lines. Have you guys ever heard of that, are you guys doing that..If that's true, maybe the dealer should have told me about that, since it seems important. What do you guys think

its really only necessary if your driving really hard... other than that there are water cooler lines that cool the turbo while driving.

i just let it idle for about 30 secs before shutoff just in case, but you shouldnt have to worry about it for regular daily driving.

It's not needed unless you are very very hard on the car. For daily driving, you can shut the car right off and leave.

with this note....

i did ask a mitus tech and this is what he told me... if our cars need a turbo timer would we have one in the car when me made it?? lol... to answer fuss... it is NO the EVOs and RAs dont need a turdo timer... or a cool off time.. heres the 3 reasons he gave me: 1st we run FULL SYNTHETIC OIL... no that im not too sure but it has something to do with the oil wont burn up or gum up when the car is sitting?? any who... 2nd the turbo is water cooled... with means when your crusing under boost it being cooled down by water... and 3rd... even with letting the car sit for a minute its not gonna cool it down but much... the engine is design to run hot and keeping it on for a minute or so it just gonna keep it hot...

in my eyes it kinda kool to have a turbo timer... lol

but you will need one if you upgrade to a biger turbo with out water cooling.... thats for sure and even that big oil cooler and high flow fan!!!

theres my 2 pennies

my friend lets his GTI cools for 20 seconds every time before he shuts off the car.....i myself am not worrying about that too much....but sometimes I do pop the hood to let the engine bay cool down after a long drive....

get a turbo timer which you can take ur key out and lock ur car and it will run on its own until about 30secs. or so and it will turn off. or you can just let the car run for a littke bit, its very important to let the turbo cool after spooling a lot with it

I know it's not the same but sometimes when I shut down my car, I can hear the fan stay on for awhile, only happens when I let my car idle for a long time.

I'm sorry but this thread is funny. Ok to answer you it's very simple what happened was just before you were about to shut your engine off you thermostat opened up moving the hot coolant out of the motor into the radiator. The coolant temp sensor read hot and it turns the fan on the cool the fluid down in the radiator.

This is user preference thing. My evo is my 6th turbo charged car and I know it is water cooled but I still prefer to let her idle for 30-60 seconds when I drive around. It's a good preventive measure to just let the car idle for a bit especially if you run at the track.

Idling for 1-2 minutes is completely unnecessary. 10-15 seconds should be more than enough.
