Quote: I've done all the recalls/reflash and have a catback but I've never noticed any burning plastic/rubber smell from the car. Do you guys actually smell it in cabin?
Yeah, I smell it in the cabin. Usually when I stop at a stop sign or red light after driving for a few minutes (doesn't matter if I baby it, drive it hard, in sport mode or normal mode) my cabin starts to get the smell a bit then gets really bad when I accelerate away. Then when I stop my car and go to the rear of the car thats all I can smell.

HAHAH!
So when my girl told me the smell, smelted like a hair straightener. I just thought I had to take a look under the car. Low and behold a plastic bag had melt onto the exhaust and stuck there. So it's dangling there and continually touching the exhaust until it all melts away. This crap happen to the evo before too. Having a freaking 3" pipe running down the middle of the car argh!!

I think this may be relevant to this thread, but it seems that this is similar to the smell I have been noticing as well. Not really smelling it with city driving, but after some freeway driving it is very noticeable.

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and just got my 2010 Ralliart, leaving my Impreza behind. I'm pretty sure I know the smell you're all talking about. It was a familiar smell in my Impreza too. I believe it is the smell of of hot/burning differential fluid when the LSD's do their work. In my Impreza it had no center diff only a rear LSD. The smell came strait from there except for when it was damaged. I would imagine that the Ralliart having a front, center and rear diff would cause the smell to possibly enter the cabin.

We took my friends Forrester with STI suspension and snow tires on a trip last weekend. After stopping for gas, I could smell the same burning rubber smell from his car too.

It seems to be something with snow tires.

I wanna believe its the snow tire thing because mine started a bit after i put them on.. but i have checked my tires over completely and i cannot find excessive wear on them that would be caused from rubbing of some sort.. It just has me boggled .
Oh well in a month or so the summer wheels get tossed back on, then we will all know if that's the issue.

I've had my snow tires since about 100 miles after buying the car, so should hopefully be obvious once I put on the new summer wheels/tires if that is really the cause!

Since I just bought mine, I still have the summer tires on and it still makes the smell. I'm pretty sure it's the diffs that cause it. Well, the only other time (other than the diffs) I smelled that exact smell was the first time I destroyed the Subarus transmission. The "burning tire" smell then was tranny fluid leaking on to my skid plate and rubbing against the burning hot transmission.
