From what I remember:

EVO 8/9 got great gains from a LICP, not much on a UICP.

It's opposite for the X/RA...UICP = great gains whereas LICP = not so much.

Nice thanks for the info

Our "upper" pipe is the 8/9's "lower" pipe.

The really shouldn't be described as "upper" or "lower", but rather as something like "hot pipe" (pre-IC) and "cold pipe" (post-IC)

Compare the engine bays of a 4B11T and 4G63...on our cars, the "upper" pipe is the "hot pipe". On a 4G63, the "upper" pipe is the "cold pipe"

There was much confusion when the X was introduced about IC pipes because the layout is completely different.

Yup exactattackally!

From the Evo General "Modding for Dummies" Which is where the confusion may have originated.

Intercooler Piping (UICP/LICP):

The upper intercooler piping (UICP) isn't going to do much in terms of gains but it will limit you to a stock flanged DV/BOV. The lower intercooler pipe is a great mod. It will improve spool up. Reason being, the stock LICP tapers towards the turbo and has unnecessary bends.

- UICP: Not really a necessary mod unless you need a different flange or you are using a mini battery and have the room to use a shorter route UCIP.
- LICP: Definitely a great mod, you'll see HP/TQ gains as well as quicker spool up.
- It's not a bad idea to upgrade the stock pipe couplings. They tend to expand under boost.

We are opposite just like velocityhead states.

So, are we all in agreement now that it's upgrading the UICP which is most beneficial in obtaining measurable Ralliart gains? Also, what amount of gains are we talking about here? Any numbers?

AMS states and I quote"By simply installing this Upper Intercooler Pipe you can expect to see 5 awhp peak and 10+ awhp gains in the midrange over stock without even re-tuning the ECU!"

I have not seen any other manufacturers make HP claims and besides I always take those HP gains with a grain of salt

Although if it is true and it is similar to UR's UICP then that makes me happy

Wow something I missed completely.
I was reading some old posts so I didn't know that at all
Thanks

Here's what injen states

Not that I believe the claims 100% but still good to know

It looks like you guys are right. Several different manufacturers such as Injen and AMS are making written claims of 5-10 hp gains for their UICP, but they don't say anything about their LICP increasing the hp, so I guess we have our answer and now I'm considering getting the UICP. Can anyone who already installed one tell me if they noticed any real-life improvement in performance of the car on the road after putting it in, or is it too small of a gain to feel when you're driving? Also, would adding a UICP void the factory warranty if the dealer saw it on the car when you went in for service?

the lower pipe on the evo 8-9 is the upper pipe on the x and ralliart.

As the lower pipe is more often replaced on the evo 8-9, so is the upper on the evo x and ralliart.

I have changed both, but the upper was much more important.

I don't know about the rest of the guys but around 2500 rpm I felt the boost kick in a lil more abruptly than when I had the stock tubing.

I don't really care about how much HP gains I got on paper. Since I can't really test for myself but feel wise you could feel the difference.

Not sure that I noticed a difference in what RPM the boost kicked in like Skym, but what I noticed:
  • Quicker thottle response (stock rubber piece flexes under boost...aftermarket doesn't).
  • More engine "noise" (intake, bov, etc...doesn't insulate sound as well as rubber stock piece).
  • Didn't notice a gain in power.

Oh yeah quicker throttle response for me as well but noise was almost same for me when I only had the drop ins.

Nice breakdown of the explanation! The first of those three things you listed sounds good to me, but I'm not crazy about the idea of making the car any louder. I actually just had a resonator installed to try and make it quieter, so this might be counterproductive for me!
